Chapter 491

The autumn breeze brushed against Cassandra Valentine's cheeks. She took a deep breath, feeling the summer heat gradually fade.

"Let's go." Cassandra tightened her grip on Evelyn Roland's arm, afraid she might change her mind.

Evelyn turned to give instructions. "Sophia, bring the car around."

Sophia Blanchet hurried off.

Adrian Valentine watched Sophia's retreating figure with an unreadable expression.

He silently followed the two women.

Evelyn pretended not to notice.

The trio stood by the roadside waiting. Sophia returned breathlessly. "The tire's flat."

Evelyn arched an eyebrow.

A luxury car shouldn't have a spontaneous flat.

Adrian seized the opportunity. "My car is just ahead."

"No need." Evelyn's voice turned icy. "Sophia, hail a cab."

Sophia rushed off again.

Adrian's eyes darkened. "You'd rather take a taxi than ride with me?"

"Don't ask questions you already know the answer to." Her tone was glacial.

"Darling—"

"Enough!" Evelyn cut him off. "I told you I'd only marry someone who truly loves me."

"That man will never be you."

She severed all possibilities with finality.

Rage flickered in Adrian's eyes. "Evelyn, you'll always be my wife."

"See you tomorrow." He turned away, barely containing his anger.

Evelyn watched his retreating figure, her chest aching faintly.

Once bitten, twice shy.

She no longer dared to touch love lightly.

Cassandra sighed. "You two are actually perfect for each other."

"He just went about it the wrong way."

Evelyn frowned. "Drop it."

"You're becoming a spinster." Cassandra teased. "My brother isn't bad."

Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Worry about yourself first."

Cassandra's expression dimmed. "Father is forcing me to marry Sebastian Cortez."

"Do you know him? Could you introduce us?"
