Chapter 51
"You... you uncultured wench!" Margaret Valentine trembled with rage, her meticulously maintained face twisting in fury.
As the matriarch of the Valentine family, she had always held herself above others. Never had she been so openly defied.
Evelyn Roland had indeed been obedient since marrying into the Valentine family.
But she didn't want a daughter-in-law who only knew how to serve tea. She wanted a noble heiress who could elevate the Valentines' status.
What did it matter if Evelyn had talent for business negotiations? Anyone could close those deals.
She looked down on this country bumpkin from the bottom of her heart.
Even if the divorce didn't happen this time, she would find a way to make her son marry Isabella Langley.
The Langley family had been thriving these past two years. An alliance with them was the wise choice.
This was the first time Evelyn had seen the elegant Margaret Valentine lose her composure. Sophia Blanchet's sharp tongue truly lived up to its reputation.
"Uncultured? You two-faced old hag are the uncultured one!" Sophia sneered.
Today, she was determined to give Evelyn the justice she deserved.
"Enough!" Adrian Valentine's voice cut through like a blade. "Evelyn, must you air our dirty laundry for all to see?"
As the head of Valentine Corporation, his wife was merely a high school graduate from the countryside. Though he never cared about such things, having his shortcomings exposed publicly ignited his fury.
Evelyn's head snapped up.
So that was it.
No wonder he wanted a secret marriage. He was ashamed of his country bumpkin wife.
Suddenly, she found it all laughable.
Natalie Lowell was right. Women in love lose all their intelligence.
How could she have been naive enough to think Adrian was different?
"Security, take them to the police station." Adrian just wanted this farce to end.
He couldn't stand the sight of Evelyn.
Every time he saw her, he remembered Christian Lefèvre's death, remembered how her heart belonged to Alexander Durand.
A sharp pain pierced Evelyn's chest.
Her lips curled into a cold smile. "Adrian, if you want to send me to the police, show me the evidence."
"Martha has already confessed. What more proof do you need?" Adrian's eyes darkened. "Don't test my patience."
With the elderly Madam Valentine just out of danger, he couldn't let this woman agitate her further.
"Oh?" Evelyn chuckled lightly. "Then I'd love to see how Mr. Valentine plans to deal with me."
She laughed at her younger self's ignorance, for loving the wrong man.
She laughed at her own stupidity, at her wishful thinking.
Those who romanticize their own suffering in love are the most pitiful.
"Evelyn, since you want to experience true torment, I'll oblige." Adrian's lips twisted into a cruel smile. "Not even Sebastian Cortez can save you now."
He raised his hand, signaling two bodyguards to seize Evelyn and Martha.
