Chapter 439
Evelyn remained silent.
She came here for quiet contemplation.
Not for a vacation.
Victor entered carrying a plush down comforter, wearing an ingratiating smile. "Madam, the bed is too hard. I brought you an extra blanket."
He hesitated before adding, "This was my own initiative. Mr. Valentine had nothing to do with it."
Evelyn glanced at the bare wooden bed and gave a slight nod.
Her body ached from the uncomfortable surface.
"Thank you," she said flatly.
Victor's eyes brightened.
Leaning against the wall, Evelyn looked breathtakingly beautiful. Her half-lidded peach blossom eyes held a mesmerizing allure.
"You're too kind, Madam. You've helped me far more than this in the past."
The corner of Evelyn's lips lifted slightly before she fell silent again.
Adrian shot Victor a cold glare sharp enough to cut glass.
Victor stiffened.
What had he done to earn the boss's ire this time?
He tactfully retreated, closing the door behind him.
Adrian meticulously smoothed out the bedding before sitting beside Evelyn.
"Shall we talk?" His voice was low.
Evelyn remained against the wall, her lazy posture unable to conceal her innate nobility.
"About what?"
Adrian's Adam's apple bobbed.
He took a deep breath. "The divorce—first to protect you, second to investigate my father's death."
"Isabella is Vincent's daughter. I only got close to her for the case. Nothing happened between us. What you saw that day was an act."
Evelyn's expression remained placid.
She had already deduced as much.
"Does saying this now change anything?" She laughed softly. "You chose the most painful method."
Adrian's heart clenched.
Her calmness terrified him.
"You always think you're protecting me." Evelyn lifted her gaze. "But you never asked what I needed."
"To you, I'll always be the weakling who needs saving—a disposable accessory you can discard and reclaim at will."
Each word pierced the most hidden corners of his heart.
Adrian's face paled. "Is that really how you see me?"
