Chapter 40
A ruthless glint flashed in Isabella Langley's eyes. "Father, Evelyn Roland must be eliminated. Even if she discovers her true origins and connection to Alexander Durand, she'll never uncover that secret. We can use Adrian Valentine's name to deal with her."
Adrian belonged to her alone.
After spending so much time together, she was completely obsessed.
She was about to enter the entertainment industry.
As the Langley heiress, she would become its brightest star.
With Adrian's influence and her beauty, fame was guaranteed.
Vincent Langley frowned. "Isabella, I have my own plans. Alexander was a genius—what if he told Evelyn the secret before he died?"
That was his greatest fear.
After finally finding a lead, he couldn't risk losing it.
Evelyn couldn't be killed.
Isabella narrowed her eyes. "Then we'll bring her back and extract the information."
Vincent nodded. "You and your mother will visit her tomorrow. Apologize for abandoning her in the countryside and invite her home for dinner."
Dominic Lombardi smirked. "The Chairman is right. Offer her the Langley name, and she'll be grateful. A neglected child always craves family."
He needed that map.
The gems and minerals were their ticket to power.
The three exchanged knowing smiles.
Isabella suddenly had a more entertaining idea.
Wouldn't it be more satisfying to make Evelyn watch her and Adrian together?
......
Evelyn had been busy lately.
Work helped numb the pain.
She closed the last file.
Only now did she understand how hard her grandfather had worked all these years.
She'd slaved for an unworthy man while her grandfather carried the burden.
Thinking of him, her lips curved unconsciously.
"Miss, have some water." Victoria Laurent entered with a glass.
Relieved to see her improved mood, Victoria exhaled.
"Are the casual clothes ready?"
"Sophia prepared everything in your preferred styles."
"We need to schedule a meeting with Chairman Lowell this month. Have Nathan arrange it."
Victoria nodded. "You've worked for three hours straight. It's time to rest."
"Call me Evelyn from now on," she said abruptly. "My identity must remain hidden."
Alexander's appearance signaled the truth was near.
But why did it involve Adrian?
Her phone buzzed.
The caller ID made her brow arch.
Eleanor Langley was contacting her?
"What do you want?"
"Evelyn, come home for dinner tonight." Eleanor's voice dripped with false warmth. "Even though you divorced Adrian, you're still our adopted daughter."
