Chapter 314

"Evelyn, do you know how Mrs. Valentine and Mrs. Langley first met?"

Evelyn recalled the elderly Mrs. Valentine mentioning their long-standing friendship during her last visit to the Valentine estate.

Cassandra Valentine's lips curled into a sardonic smile. "They've known each other for decades. That's why Mrs. Valentine favors Isabella so much. Their families are well-matched socially and benefit each other commercially."

She paused, giving Evelyn a frustrated look. "Like this diamond deal—Vincent Langley's goods are exclusively sold through Adrian Valentine's department stores."

Cassandra exhaled sharply. "You could've kept those mining rights for yourself. Why hand them to Vincent Langley?"

Evelyn's expression remained neutral. "Consider it repayment for raising me."

Cassandra fell silent.

The price was staggeringly high.

A server arrived with roasted brain in spicy oil. Evelyn eyed the white curds floating in crimson sauce, her brow furrowing slightly.

Cassandra eagerly scooped a spoonful. "Try it! This is Vienna's signature dish."

Evelyn took a tentative bite—then her eyes lit up.

"Good, right?" Cassandra grinned like a child. "I come here monthly for my fix."

Two platters of skewered meats soon covered the table. Evelyn blinked at the mountainous portion.

"Trust me, you won't stop eating." Cassandra handed her a lamb skewer.

Juicy meat sizzled with fragrant spices. Evelyn's first bite revealed tender, perfectly charred perfection.

They lingered until past ten. Evelyn walked slower, pleasantly stuffed.

"Burp—" Cassandra sighed contentedly.

Evelyn bought two yogurt drinks from a vending machine.

"Shouldn't we get coffee?" Cassandra raised an eyebrow.

"Healthier." Evelyn twisted open a bottle for her.

Suddenly, Cassandra burst into laughter—then tears streamed down her face.

Evelyn stopped walking.

"You understand me, don't you?" Cassandra wiped her cheeks, voice cracking.

Evelyn studied her quietly.

All these years, Cassandra had shouldered the Valentine family burdens alone. Her abrasive demeanor was merely armor.

"I understand," Evelyn said softly.

Cassandra stiffened. "Do you really?"
