Chapter 128
"Evelyn, you're finally back." Gabrielle stood up from the carpet, smoothing the wrinkles from her clothes. Since Evelyn had moved in, they'd all naturally started calling her "sister."
"Mmm." Evelyn hung her coat on the rack. "Gabrielle, I'll need you to handle Christian's acupuncture tonight. I'm going to shower first."
Gabrielle gathered the scattered toys into a storage box. These days, she cared for the twins more attentively than their own mother.
"You seem happy today?" Gabrielle noticed the smile in Evelyn's eyes.
Evelyn rubbed her swollen chest. "I need to shower. It's time to feed them."
The bathroom door had barely closed when Felicia pouted toward it. Tristan kicked his legs impatiently, tiny hands reaching toward where his mother had gone.
"Missing Mommy?" Gabrielle picked up Felicia, expertly changing her diaper. "She'll be right back."
She'd delivered these two with her own hands. Every time she saw their delicate little faces, it still amazed her.
"How did you both turn out so beautiful?" She pinched Tristan's chubby cheek. "Auntie misses you after just one day apart."
After diapering both babies, Gabrielle laid them side by side on the large bed.
"Wait nicely for Mommy." She gently patted their backs.
Evelyn emerged drying her hair to find two pairs of eyes fixed on the bathroom door.
"I'll take them." She gathered the children. "You should rest."
Felicia immediately tugged at Evelyn's collar. Tristan didn't move, but his lips made tiny sucking motions.
"Starving, aren't you?" Evelyn leaned against the headboard, cradling one child in each arm.
They nursed contentedly. Felicia occasionally raised a hand to examine her fingers curiously. Tristan focused on feeding, occasionally glancing up to smile at his mother.
Evelyn's heart melted—until she saw Tristan's eyes, identical to Adrian's. A sharp pain pierced her chest.
Adrian would never know two children carried his blood.
It wasn't fair to them.
Or to him.
Evelyn took a deep breath, pushing down the rising ache. From now on, she just needed to focus on raising them well.
Once fed, both babies quickly fell asleep in her arms. Evelyn carefully settled them in bed and tucked them in.
She softly stroked their faces until their breathing steadied, then turned off the light and lay down.
The next morning, Evelyn's first action upon waking was reaching for her phone beside the pillow.
