Chapter 371

"Good job." Ethan Roscente tapped the desk with his slender fingers. "Do you know how to handle Fourth Aunt?"

"Understood, Mr. Roscente."

Zachary Evans responded respectfully but couldn't resist stealing a glance at the imposing man behind the desk. "Sir... is something wrong?"

The man's lips curved slightly, but his eyes remained icy. "The old man summoned Margaret."

Margaret was Ethan’s informant at the Roscente estate, assigned to watch over Fourth Aunt. The sudden summons was suspicious.

"Good thing you anticipated this." Zachary immediately understood.

"Cancel tonight's engagement." Ethan closed the file. "We're heading back to the estate."

"Is it because Miss Lowell returned?"

The moment the words left his mouth, a sharp gaze pinned him in place. "Since when do I need permission to go home?"

Zachary broke into a cold sweat and forced a smile. "Of course, you can return whenever you wish."

Ethan snorted and reopened the file. Zachary discreetly wiped his forehead.

His boss’s unpredictable temper was harder to read than June weather.

The moment the elder Roscente left, Emily Laurent dragged Sophia Lowell into the bedroom.

"Tell me the truth." She frowned. "What’s really going on between you and Ethan? When did I ever ask him to bring medicine? And when did I send you to pick it up?"

Emily wasn’t stupid. The sudden concern for her health, especially the mention of herbal medicine, was clearly a test.

Sophia’s heart skipped a beat, but her expression remained calm. "I ran into Grandpa at Roscente Group the other day. He didn’t like me, so I made up an excuse."

She deliberately omitted Ethan’s involvement, mixing truth with lies.

"Why were you at Roscente Group?" Emily seized the inconsistency. "And you just happened to run into the old man?"

Her gaze bore into Sophia. "What are you hiding? You and Ethan—"

Sophia’s breath hitched.

"—when did you get so close?"

Hearing the cautious probe, Sophia relaxed slightly. "It’s because of Isabella Valentine." She feigned nonchalance. "She accused me of leaking company secrets and got me fired. I went to Jessica for help clearing my name."

"Isabella Valentine?" Emily was stunned. "The Valentine heiress engaged to Ethan?"

Sophia nodded.

"How did you offend her?"

"Women’s grudges don’t need reasons." Sophia brushed it off lightly.

Emily’s frown deepened. "If she marries into the family, won’t that mean—"

"I’m hardly ever at the Roscente estate anyway." Sophia smiled carelessly, though a shadow flickered in her eyes.
