Chapter 332
Sophia's fingers unconsciously twisted the hem of her blouse.
"Will the deal be finalized if I go?" Her voice trembled slightly.
A soft chuckle came through the phone. "Almost certain."
The vague answer made her temples throb.
But opportunities were fleeting.
"I'm on my way." She bit her lower lip. "No more tricks."
"Who would dare deceive a clever fox like you?"
The call ended abruptly. Sophia tossed her phone into her bag and yanked the car door open with more force than necessary.
Ethan Roscente stared at the darkened screen, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"Her temper's grown." He turned to Jessica, who had just entered. "When Sophia arrives, greet her."
Jessica's eyes lit up. "She's coming back?"
"Yes."
"I'll prepare right away!" Jessica turned to leave but was stopped.
"You're close with Isabella's agent?"
Jessica paused. "You mean Zoe? She's my cousin, but we're not particularly close."
Ethan nodded thoughtfully. "You're better than her."
Jessica stood frozen, only snapping out of it after the office door clicked shut.
Thirty minutes later, in front of Roscente Tower.
Sophia adjusted her mask in the rearview mirror. Returning after being kicked out was beyond awkward.
"Sophia!"
The familiar voice sent a jolt through her. Jessica waved at her from beside the revolving doors.
"Jessica." Her smile under the mask was strained.
"My god!" Jessica squeezed her wrist. "You've lost so much weight! Any thinner and you'll float away."
Morning sickness and work stress had taken their toll. Sophia deftly changed the subject. "Just proof of my discipline."
As the elevator ascended, she noticed many empty desks in the office area.
"Purge." Jessica lowered her voice. "After you left, Mr. Roscente fired all the slackers." She added meaningfully, "Coincidentally, they were the same ones who targeted you."
Sophia's nails dug into her palms.
"Don't joke." Her laugh was hollow. "I was publicly accused of leaking company secrets. Everyone knows that."
