Chapter 29

Isabella Valentine bit her lower lip, her eyes reddening. "Sophia, why can you hand over all other projects except this key one?" Her voice trembled. "Are you afraid I'll outshine you?"

Sophia Lowell's fingers paused mid-motion. "The project is complex. I'm concerned you might struggle."

"But you were a rookie once too," Isabella's tears fell freely. "Or... do you think I'm not as capable as you?"

Sophia's temple throbbed.

This white lotus was really committed to her act.

Just as she opened her mouth to respond, Ethan Roscente's icy voice cut in. "Isabella will take over the project. You'll assist her."

"What if something goes wrong—"

"Then it's your failure."

Sophia's head snapped up.

"You left without hesitation before, yet now you cling to it." Ethan's gaze was mocking. "Don't you find that ridiculous, Sophia?"

Her heart clenched violently.

Had his favoritism blinded him to the company's interests?

Ethan handed the documents to Isabella. "Ask if you have any questions."

"Thank you, Ethan~" Isabella's voice dripped with sweetness, her eyes flirting shamelessly.

Sophia's stomach churned.

"I'll excuse myself."

"Wait." Ethan stopped her. "You're responsible for looking after Isabella at tonight's welcome party."

"I have plans—"

"A date, perhaps?" Isabella sighed dreamily. "How romantic."

Ethan's expression darkened. "Mandatory attendance. Unless..." He narrowed his eyes. "Do resigning employees get special privileges?"

Sophia's nails dug into her palms.

He was forcing her to be Isabella's drinking shield.

He knew alcohol made her ill.

"...Understood."

The moment the office door closed, Sophia leaned against the wall, breathing deeply.

He was still angry.

Ever since she ended things, this torment was inevitable.

Just a little longer.
