Chapter 21

Sophia's chest tightened, her nails digging into her palms. The doctor had warned her to avoid emotional turmoil during pregnancy, so she forced herself to suppress the storm inside.

She lifted her gaze to meet Ethan Roscente's eyes. "The woman by your side tonight—that was Isabella Valentine, wasn't it?"

His expression remained indifferent. "You already know the answer."

"Yes, I do." She glanced at the intimate distance between them. "So what does that make me now? Your dirty little secret?"

Suddenly, she grabbed his hand. The silver ring on his finger gleamed coldly under the light. "Doesn't it disgust you to touch me while wearing this?"

Ethan pulled his hand back. "It's not a wedding ring."

Sophia froze. The plain band did look worn, nothing like an engagement piece. But if it wasn't a wedding ring, why did he never take it off?

She shoved him away and straightened her disheveled collar. "It's late. You should leave, Uncle."

She emphasized the last word.

Ethan let out a cold laugh. "You didn't seem to remember I was your uncle when you climbed into my bed."

"That's why I regret it."

Her reply was sharp.

His gaze turned piercing, as if trying to see through her facade. After a long pause, he scoffed. "You're ruthless, Sophia."

"Good. You finally understand."

"Fine." He suddenly relented, making her heart skip.

Amid the swirling smoke, his voice was lazy. "I was only after your body anyway. These past few days without you weren’t as unbearable as I thought."

Her fingers trembled, but she forced a cold smile. "I'm glad you've come to your senses."

From now on, they would go their separate ways.

She swallowed the inexplicable ache in her chest. "I'll avoid family gatherings at the estate."

"Good." He flicked his cigarette ash. "Since we're ending this, two million will be wired to your account tomorrow."

"Fine."

It would drain her savings, but it was better than prolonging this mess.

Ethan abruptly stubbed out his cigarette. "Quitting without notice looks bad. Return to the office tomorrow for the handover. These past days will be marked as unexcused absences."

"I already have a new job!"

"That kindergarten teacher gig?" He raised a mocking brow. "Better than serving tea?"

Her cheeks burned with anger. "At least I won't have to serve anyone!"

"Didn't I serve you enough?"

"..."

This bastard!

"Follow the proper resignation procedure." He gave her one last glance before turning away. "Wouldn’t want people saying I mistreated my niece."

The moment the door closed, Sophia's legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the sofa.
