Chapter 89
Sophia's fingers trembled as she pulled out her phone. "I'll contact the witness right now."
The call went through, but no one answered.
She redialed stubbornly. The endless busy tone hammered against her chest like a series of brutal blows.
"What's going on?" The officer frowned.
Sophia's face turned deathly pale. "The witness... suddenly disappeared..."
"Are you playing games with us?" The officer's expression darkened instantly.
Sophia's eyes reddened with desperation. "There really is a witness! I—" She suddenly looked up, her gaze sharp as a blade as it pierced Ethan. "You did this!"
No one else could have cut off her escape route so quickly.
Ethan remained indifferent, his entire being radiating icy detachment. He turned to Chief Chen. "Handle this according to the law. Those who do wrong must pay the price."
His words were a dagger, plunging straight into Sophia's heart.
"Understood, understood." Chief Chen nodded repeatedly. "We'll enforce the law impartially."
Isabella tugged at Ethan's sleeve with feigned concern. "Ethan, maybe we should just let this go..."
"No need." Ethan's cold gaze swept over Sophia's defiant face. "Some people don't deserve sympathy." He signaled to his assistant. "Escort Miss Valentine out."
Isabella lingered reluctantly. "Don't take too long."
Ethan gave a noncommittal hum before locking eyes with Sophia's furious glare. "Not satisfied?"
"You're protecting her at the cost of justice?" Sophia clenched her fists.
"Since when have you ever believed I cared about justice?" His lips curled in mockery.
Sophia took a step forward. "This was all Isabella's scheme!"
"Using a necklace worth millions as bait?" Ethan scoffed. "Do you think she's a fool? Or—" His eyes hardened. "Is this your way of getting back at her?"
"That's absurd!" Sophia trembled with rage. "Why would I do that?"
"Why?" He advanced on her step by step. "Who was it that swore last night to make her pay? Now that your plan has backfired, you want to shift the blame?"
