Chapter 149

Ethan's nose nearly touched the door.

He took half a step back, his face dark with anger. "Sophia," he ground out through clenched teeth.

Inside the bedroom, Sophia ignored him, pulling the covers over herself.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The deafening knocks exploded through the apartment.

She yanked the blanket over her head, but the sound pierced through, growing more urgent with each strike.

"Who the hell is banging doors at this hour?"

"I'm calling the cops!"

Neighbors' angry shouts rose from nearby apartments.

Ethan paid no attention, only knocking harder. "Open this door, or I'll break it down."

Sophia rolled over, unmoving.

Old Mrs. Li from across the hall shuffled out in her robe, blinking at Ethan in surprise.

"Young man, who are you looking for so late?"

Instantly, Ethan's expression softened into concern. "My girlfriend is inside. She's not feeling well—her cycle—and I'm worried something might be wrong..."

Mrs. Li's face melted with sympathy. "Ah, young couples these days, always so dramatic. Wait here, dear. Let me talk some sense into her."

Sophia heard every word.

She threw off the covers. How dare he twist the truth!

"Mrs. Li, don't believe him! He's just a—"

Before she could finish, Ethan shouldered past the door and slammed it shut behind him.

"A wanted criminal? A home invader?" His eyes narrowed dangerously. "Your storytelling skills are improving, Ms. Lowell."

Sophia backed away, watching him warily. "What do you want?"

Ethan leisurely undid his cufflinks, a slow smirk curling his lips. "To collect what you owe me."
