Chapter 298
Sophia's heart clenched when she heard the doctor's knock.
Her hand instinctively flew to her abdomen.
"Miss Lowell, I was sent by Mr. Valdemar," the doctor explained gently.
Sophia froze.
Sebastian Valdemar?
She immediately reached for the landline.
"Sebastian?"
"The doctor is my arrangement," his calm voice came through the receiver. "Let him examine you."
Her eyes grew moist.
After a thorough checkup, the doctor smiled. "The baby is perfectly healthy."
"Really?" Her voice trembled.
"Strong heartbeat. However..." He hesitated. "You've suffered shock. Prenatal vitamins are necessary."
A weight lifted from her shoulders.
Next door, smoke curled through the suite.
Zachary Evans bowed his head. "The surveillance blind spot caught nothing suspicious."
Ethan Roscente crushed his cigarette.
"Keep digging."
His phone vibrated. A glance at the screen.
"The old master—"
"Leave it." Ethan stood abruptly.
In the hallway, he intercepted the doctor.
"How is she?"
"Minor water inhalation. The medication will suffice."
Ethan's gaze darkened.
When he entered, Sophia sat staring blankly at her water glass.
"Still unwell?" His voice was rough.
She shook her head.
He settled beside her, thumb grazing her pale lips.
"My oversight."
She flinched away.
"An accident."
Rain pattered against the windows.
Ethan studied her profile before speaking:
"It wasn't."
