Chapter 447
Evelyn's fingers hovered over her phone screen, lost in thought.
"Ms. Carter, your ginger tea is ready. It's best when hot."
Britley's voice snapped Evelyn back to reality. She straightened her posture. "Just set it there, thank you."
"Of course."
As Britley turned to leave, Evelyn suddenly spoke. "Britley... if someone suddenly becomes unreachable, could it mean something's wrong?"
The experienced housekeeper took one look at Evelyn's troubled expression and understood immediately. "Ms. Evelyn, this is about Mr. Whitmore, isn't it?"
Heat rushed to Evelyn's cheeks at being so transparent.
"Britley, you—"
The older woman smiled knowingly. "You've mentioned Mr. Whitmore several times this week. Even an old woman like me couldn't miss it."
Evelyn's blush deepened. "That's not what I meant!"
Britley patted her hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, dear. If Mr. Whitmore hasn't contacted you, he's likely occupied with business. He'll reach out when he can."
"You really think so?"
The uncertainty in Evelyn's voice surprised even herself. She hadn't realized how much Harrison's silence affected her.
"Absolutely, Ms. Evelyn. Don't dwell on it. The car will arrive shortly to take you to the office."
Evelyn nodded, some tension leaving her shoulders. "Thank you, Britley."
With a final smile, Britley exited. Evelyn rose from bed and scrolled through her contacts, searching for anyone who might have information about Harrison.
Her fingers stilled. A realization struck her - she knew disturbingly little about the man who'd occupied her thoughts all morning.
Evelyn struggled to focus during her morning meetings.
Maxwell cleared his throat. "Ms. Carter? Your thoughts on this proposal? How should we proceed?"
She blinked. "Pardon?"
Adjusting his glasses, Maxwell handed her the documents. "You seem distracted today."
Evelyn flipped through the pages, schooling her expression. "Nonsense."
Maxwell saw right through her. "Is something troubling you?"
"Nothing at all! Let's proceed with the project as planned." She signed the documents with practiced efficiency.
"Understood, Ms. Carter."
After Maxwell left, Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, taking a steadying breath. The office door swung open again.
"Maxwell, was there something else?"
Julian arched an eyebrow. "Not Maxwell. Just me."
Evelyn turned, her face brightening. "Julian! What brings you here?"
He flashed a mysterious grin. "I've got a surprise for you."
Her curiosity piqued. "What kind of surprise?"
Julian clapped his hands dramatically. "Come in!"
A young woman entered, offering a polite smile. "Hello, I'm Katherine Whitaker."
Evelyn shot Julian a questioning look. "What's this about?"
He shrugged casually. "Now that Kingsley Industries has launched its talent division, we need fresh faces."
"Katherine here is my junior. She just wrapped a hit web series and her previous contract expired."
