Chapter 280

After the quick introductions, Evelyn flashed a polite smile. "Pleasure meeting you, Dr. Whitmore."

Matthias let out an amused chuckle. "Well, well, Harrison. Coming to the ER for such a minor scrape? People might start thinking you're—"

The confirmation that Harrison wasn't seriously injured made Evelyn exhale in relief.

"Thank goodness it's nothing serious. I appreciate your help, Dr. Whitmore."

Matthias approached with antiseptic and bandages, his movements practiced. "Just a surface wound. Though next time, try not to take impromptu meetings with the pavement."

As he finished dressing the wound, he turned to Evelyn. "All set, Ms. Carter. You can complete the paperwork at reception."

"Of course."

Evelyn turned to leave, her heels clicking against the linoleum floor.

Watching her retreat, Matthias couldn't resist teasing. "If I'm not mistaken, that's the Evelyn you've been mooning over for years, isn't it?"

His tone held the satisfaction of someone who'd just solved a complex puzzle.

He continued, "No wonder you've been single all this time. Your flirting technique needs serious work, my friend."

Harrison cleared his throat, an uncharacteristic hint of vulnerability in his voice. "Got any pointers?"

Matthias's eyebrows shot up. "Is this really the legendary Harrison Whitmore asking for dating advice?"

With a conspiratorial grin, he leaned in. "First rule - be genuine. Though a little strategic vulnerability never hurt anyone."

"That said, she's clearly interested. Put in the effort and seal the deal. We're all waiting for wedding invitations."

When they exited the hospital, Harrison's forearm was wrapped in pristine white gauze.

The injury had been minor, but Matthias had insisted on the dramatic bandaging for effect.

Harrison found it excessive.

He reached to remove it, but Evelyn stopped him. "Harrison, the wound needs to stay covered."

"Try not to get it wet tonight, and have your assistant handle anything strenuous."

Harrison paused, suddenly finding the bandage rather charming.

"Alright, I'll follow doctor's orders."

The wail of an approaching ambulance cut through their conversation.

As the vehicle screeched to a halt, nurses rushed out with a gurney. Evelyn caught a glimpse of the patient's face.

Rosalind.

Their eyes met in silent understanding.

Harrison's expression darkened. "This isn't over."

Rosalind's condition was critical.

Already weakened from the equestrian accident, the car impact had left her in a vegetative state.

Maxwell delivered the news as Evelyn exited her board meeting.

"The police investigation suggests this wasn't an accident," he reported. "They're treating it as attempted homicide. She's under police guard now."

Evelyn's face remained impassive. The development didn't surprise her.

"And the Blackwell family?"

"No movement yet. Nathan's containing the story to protect Sterling Enterprises."

"Have legal handle the fallout."

"Understood, Ms. Carter."

Back in her office, Evelyn turned to business. "The Dunhill project encompasses both crude oil and mining sectors."
