Chapter 113
Adrian Prescott stormed into Evelyn Carter's office the moment he returned to Kingsley Industries.
"Evelyn, now that everyone knows who you really are, why don't we just honor our families' wishes and get married?" His voice carried an unusual urgency.
Evelyn didn't hesitate. "I appreciate the offer, Adrian, but marriage isn't something I'm considering right now."
His expression softened. "Then whenever you're ready, just say the word. I'll be waiting."
She massaged her temples, feeling the beginnings of a migraine. "Mr. Prescott, we've had this conversation before. We're not compatible."
"What makes you say that?" He leaned forward, his blue eyes intense. "You haven't given me a proper chance. How can you reject me without even trying to know me better?"
"Do you actually know me?" Her sharp retort left him momentarily speechless.
"We have all the time in the world to learn about each other," he recovered, though some of his earlier confidence had faded.
Evelyn sighed. "Marriage requires love as its foundation. Not family expectations or business alliances."
"Then I'll make you fall in love with me." The determination in his voice surprised her. "Don't worry, I won't pressure you. We'll take things slow."
Before she could respond, he flashed his signature charming smile and stood up. "Back to work, Ms. Carter. I've got meetings to attend."
As the door closed behind him, Evelyn exhaled deeply. The weight of her responsibilities pressed down on her shoulders.
The following days saw Evelyn buried under endless meetings. The executive floor remained brightly lit late into every night.
Meanwhile, Julian Hawthorne listened to his subordinates' reports with growing satisfaction.
"She's putting on quite the show," he sneered. "Let's see how she plans to turn this company around."
"Director Hawthorne, we're monitoring all her projects closely. None show potential for significant impact yet."
"Excellent. Keep watching her every move. Don't let her slip through our fingers."
"Of course, sir."
"Any updates on my meeting with Mr. Sterling and Mr. Langley?"
"Confirmed for seven tonight at Le Jardin. Both gentlemen have confirmed their attendance. The restaurant has been notified."
"Good. Ensure I'm not late."
Julian's eyes gleamed with calculation. The very public divorce between Nathan Sterling and Evelyn Carter had created ripples throughout the business world. Their animosity was common knowledge now.
As the old saying went - the enemy of my enemy is my friend. If Julian could secure Nathan as an ally, his path to control would become much smoother.
This thought brought him immense satisfaction.
At precisely seven, Julian arrived at the upscale restaurant and settled into the private dining room.
He checked his gold wristwatch impatiently. "Where are they? They should be here by now."
