Chapter 40

The scent of whiskey clung to him like a second skin.

Nathan Sterling was completely wasted, yet he managed to raise a trembling finger toward the stage. "Gorgeous, isn't she? That's my ex-wife." His head then slumped forward as if sleep had claimed him.

"You're full of shit, Nate. Why would you cheat on someone who looks like that?" Adrian Prescott nudged Nathan's shoulder, checking if he'd truly passed out.

"If she were mine, I'd be grinning in my dreams," Adrian mused, convinced Nathan was just spouting drunken nonsense.

"She's my goddess now, so shut your trap, alright?" Adrian demanded.

But Nathan was already unconscious, deaf to his words.

Adrian's gaze returned to Evelyn Carter.

With a drunkard draped over him, he wouldn't make much of an impression approaching her now.

After a moment's hesitation, he changed course, hauling Nathan back to their VIP booth instead.

Dumping Nathan with Gregory Hammond and the others, Adrian rushed back to catch another glimpse of Evelyn. But the stage now held a different performer. She'd vanished.

His longing burned hotter. Snapping his fingers, he summoned his assistant. "Find out where Evelyn Carter is staying in Kingsley Heights."

The next morning, Evelyn's assistant entered with news. "Ms. Carter, someone's waiting downstairs to collect the 999 roses they sent you."

Evelyn glanced up, perplexed. She had no clue who could have sent them.
