Chapter 189

Nathan stood frozen where Evelyn had left him, an icy sensation creeping through his veins.

Did this mean she wouldn't even consider giving him another chance?

Everything felt like it was spiraling out of control. No matter how hard he tried, she always slipped through his fingers.

An unfamiliar panic gripped his chest.

Just then, Cassandra drove past him in her sleek Mercedes.

Nathan's brow furrowed as he watched the car disappear in the same direction Evelyn had gone. His pulse quickened inexplicably.

Without thinking, he jumped into his own vehicle and followed.

Meanwhile, Evelyn was on the phone with Olivia while driving. "Liv! My design got approved! I'm leading this year's fashion show in Pamore!"

Olivia's squeal of delight filled the car. "That's amazing! We have to celebrate tonight!"

"I can't," Evelyn replied quickly. "I promised Harrison I'd meet him tonight."

"Oh?" Olivia's voice turned teasing. "Do tell your best friend everything."

Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Don't get any ideas. Harrison and I are practically siblings."

"Bullshit," Olivia scoffed. "That man is ten times better than your ex-husband. Open your eyes, Ev! If you let this one slip away, you'll die alone."

"Maybe I will," Evelyn joked weakly.

Olivia wasn't having it. "Seriously, Evelyn. Tell me the truth - do you still have feelings for Nathan?"

"No."

"Then what's the problem?"

Evelyn pressed her lips together, focusing on the road. The only thing she knew for certain was that she'd moved on from Nathan. She'd wasted enough time already.

Her heart simply couldn't take another risk.

"Hello? Earth to Evelyn!"

"Okay, okay!" Evelyn sighed. "Let's just let things happen naturally, alright? Right now, I just want to focus on improving the company's performance and nailing this fashion show. Everything else can wait."

The words had barely left her mouth when a black SUV suddenly swerved into her lane, heading straight for her car.

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

Her hands tightened on the wheel as she instinctively jerked it to the right.

At the last possible second, a familiar Bentley cut in front of her, taking the full impact of the collision instead.

The deafening crash echoed through the street.

Thick black smoke billowed from the crumpled hood of the Bentley. Evelyn's hands trembled violently.

"Evelyn? What's happening?" Olivia's frantic voice came through the speakers.

Evelyn couldn't respond.

She knew that car.

She knew exactly who was inside.

With shaking legs, she stumbled out of her vehicle and ran toward the wreckage.

Through the shattered window, she saw Nathan slumped over the steering wheel, blood dripping down his face.

Her stomach dropped.

"Nathan!" She pounded on the glass, her voice breaking. "Wake up! Please wake up!"

His eyelids fluttered weakly.

"Ev...Evelyn..."

Even half-conscious, he was calling her name.

His hand twitched toward her before going limp, his body collapsing against the seat.
