Chapter 137
Harrison released Evelyn abruptly, leaving her seething with rage.
"You think you've won, Vanessa? Just wait—I'll make sure you're thrown out of Sterling Enterprises and left with nothing."
Evelyn couldn't help but smirk at the empty threat, her gaze drifting casually toward Nathan who stood nearby.
"Mr. Sterling," she said smoothly, "your sister appears to have overindulged. Perhaps you should escort her home before she makes more of a spectacle?"
Nathan strode forward, his expression thunderous as he gripped Vanessa's arm. "We're leaving."
"But Nate! I was defending your honor! Why are you—"
"Enough!" His voice cut through her protests. "Do you enjoy being the evening's entertainment?" The realization of their audience's judgmental stares finally silenced her.
A flush of shame crept up Vanessa's neck as she recalled her earlier outburst.
The siblings exited abruptly, Nathan practically dragging his humiliated sister through the gilded doors.
Once they'd gone, Harrison turned to Evelyn with concern. "Are you alright?"
She gave a small shake of her head. "Perfectly fine."
"Did she always treat you this way?" His voice held unexpected tenderness. "What kind of life did you endure these past years?"
Vanessa's behavior had shocked him more than he cared to admit. The thought of what Evelyn must have suffered twisted something in his chest.
"That life is over now." Her chin lifted slightly. "I won't be anyone's victim again."
Suddenly, Harrison pulled her into an embrace. "If she ever dares approach you again, I'll make certain she regrets it."
Warmth flooded Evelyn's chest. "Thank you, Harrison. You're like the brother I never had."
The word "brother" made his arms stiffen momentarily before he released her with a quiet sigh. His expression quickly schooled into neutrality.
"Think nothing of it. I made a promise to Mr. Kingsley to look after you."
Evelyn responded with a grateful nod.
"Actually," Harrison continued smoothly, "I have a meeting tomorrow regarding investments in quantum computing. Interested?"
The emerging quantum technology field had barely touched domestic markets—whoever established foothold now would reap tremendous rewards.
"What time? I'd love to join you."
"My driver will collect you at eight." Harrison produced two crystal glasses seemingly from nowhere. "To new ventures?"
Their glasses touched with a musical chime. "To lucrative partnerships."
Horizon Technologies' gala continued until nearly midnight. As guests departed, Evelyn found her evening had been remarkably productive—several influential figures had expressed interest in collaboration.
Just as she considered leaving, a poised woman approached. "Ms. Carter, may I see you home?" The woman's tone held professional deference.
Her tailored suit spoke of quiet confidence, her makeup accentuating striking features.
Evelyn arched a brow. "And you are...?"
"Diana Chamberlain," she introduced with practiced grace. "Mr. Whitmore's assistant. He's currently detained, but asked that I ensure your comfort."
As she spoke, Diana's sharp eyes discreetly assessed Evelyn. After years as Harrison's right hand, she'd witnessed countless women come and go—yet none had ever commanded his attention quite like this one.
