Chapter 46
Evelyn straightened her posture and pulled out her phone, dialing Dominic's number. He had just returned to Darai after his business trip.
This was bizarre. Why would Adrian Prescott abandon his prestigious position as president of Sterling Enterprises in Darai to apply for a job at her small branch office in Pamore?
Something smelled fishy. She needed Dominic's insight.
When he answered, his voice was warm yet authoritative. "Evelyn? What's the matter?"
She glanced at the director standing awkwardly beside her, then lowered her voice. "Dominic, Adrian is here in Pamore. He just applied to work at our branch. Did the Prescotts go under or something?"
Dominic chuckled. Evelyn had always despised Adrian, never missing a chance to mock him.
"No, Mr. Prescott Senior sent him back. But I had no idea he applied to your branch."
"Good. I'll have HR reject him immediately."
"Hold on, Evelyn," Dominic interjected smoothly.
"You know how brilliant Adrian is with investments. He's practically a prodigy."
"If he joins your team, your branch’s performance will skyrocket this year. The shareholders will be thrilled."
Evelyn hesitated, her tone softening into something almost playful. "But what if he brings up the engagement?"
"You've kept your identity hidden all this time. He has no idea you're his fiancée. Unless you tell him, how would he know?"
Sensing her hesitation, Dominic pressed further. "Your branch needs talent like his right now. Are you really going to let personal grudges get in the way of success?"
He had a point. Her priority was turning the Pamore branch around, and rejecting a genius over old resentment was unprofessional.
After a reluctant sigh, she ended the call and turned to the waiting director. Clearing her throat, she muttered, "Fine. Let him stay."
The director beamed, showering her with praise before scurrying off—just like Trevor had done the other day.
The next morning, Evelyn stepped into the company lobby only to hear excited whispers.
"He's gorgeous!"
"So he's the one sending all those flowers!"
Following their gazes, she spotted Adrian in a custom-tailored suit, holding an extravagant bouquet of roses. His flirtatious smile made her scoff.
So he was the mystery admirer. She should’ve known it wasn’t Nathan.
Her expression turned icy as she strode past him without acknowledgment. But he darted in front of her, undeterred.
"Long time no see. You remember me, don’t you?"
"No."
His grin widened. "I made you laugh on that balcony in Darai. You even used my handkerchief to dry your tears. Still nothing?"
Evelyn flicked her bangs aside, irritation rising. "Move. Now."
"I never thanked you for the gold bangle." He offered the bouquet again, but her glare only darkened.
She had hoped ignoring him would make him disappear. Instead, he clung like gum on her shoe. Infuriating.
Switching to boss mode, she gave him a scathing once-over. "You work here?"
Unaware of her simmering rage, Adrian answered cheerfully, "Yes! First day in the investment department. Hi, boss!"
Evelyn tapped her watch sharply, raising her voice. "What time is it? Get to work! Or do you want to be fired for harassing your CEO?"
Adrian froze. He’d never seen a woman command such authority.
Nearby, the investment director panicked. Spotting his new employee’s blunder, he snatched the roses, tossed them in the trash, and yanked Adrian toward the emergency stairs.
Finally satisfied, Evelyn stepped into the elevator—only to realize everyone else had fled to the stairs.
What was wrong with these people?
Meanwhile, the staff exchanged stunned glances. Evelyn usually arrived with a smile. None had ever seen her snap like that.
Why was she so furious over flowers?
