Chapter 336

Sylvia Montgomery's nails dug into her palms until they left crescent-shaped marks. Yet she felt nothing.

Out of nowhere, Conrad Montgomery stormed toward his daughter.

The sharp sound of a slap echoed through the room. Sylvia's hand flew to her stinging cheek in shock. "Father, how could you hit me?"

Conrad's face was purple with rage.

Dominic Kingsley had already sent warnings about Sylvia deliberately causing trouble for Evelyn Carter.

"Do you think you're untouchable now?" Conrad hissed through clenched teeth. "What were my exact instructions before this event? And yet you provoked Ms. Carter?"

Sylvia cradled her burning face.

Never in her life had her doting father struck her - especially not in public over some nobody like Evelyn.

She kept her eyes downcast but seethed inwardly, blaming everything on Evelyn.

"You've jeopardized Montgomery Electronics!" Conrad spat, veins bulging at his temples. "Do you comprehend the damage you've caused?"

Sylvia bit her lip until she tasted blood.

Seeing her stubborn silence, Conrad snapped, "Get out of here before you humiliate us further."

Tears welled in Sylvia's eyes. "Father-"

"Not another word! Your accounts are frozen until we resolve this disaster."

Sylvia visibly deflated, but Conrad had already turned away, scanning the crowd for Evelyn to offer his groveling apology.

Evelyn stood encircled by eager business associates, leaving no breathing room.

When the last sycophant finally retreated, Evelyn collapsed onto a sofa with an exhausted sigh. Then she felt it - that prickling sensation of being watched.

Her sharp gaze swept across the room.

Nothing.

Had she imagined it?

The moment she looked away, a shadow detached itself from behind a pillar. Dark eyes burned into Evelyn's back, filled with turbulent emotions.

"Ms. Carter, you were magnificent!" Adrian Prescott materialized beside her, eyes shining with admiration.

Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Mr. Prescott, Prescott Enterprises seems to be thriving under your leadership."

"I'd rather be at Kingsley Industries," Adrian confessed. "At least there I saw you daily."

Evelyn remained silent.

Adrian leaned closer. "The moment I returned, my father started badgering me about our families' old marriage arrangement."

He took her hand. "You're single now. Why not fulfill our parents' wishes?"

Evelyn extracted her hand with an awkward laugh. "Mr. Prescott, you'll regret this when you meet your true love."

Adrian's expression turned earnest. "Ms. Carter, my feelings for you are genuine. There's no one else I want."

Evelyn shook her head. What Adrian mistook for love was merely infatuation.

"Let's make a wager, Mr. Prescott."

Adrian's face lit up. "If I win, you'll marry me?"

"Is marriage all you think about?"
