Chapter 177
Evelyn's brow furrowed slightly as all eyes in the room turned toward her. She could feel her pulse quickening beneath her skin.
"I'm not the most knowledgeable about this particular fashion show," Evelyn said, her voice measured. "I'm certain my seniors have far more experience than I do."
Her words carried a quiet humility that didn't go unnoticed.
Edmund Whitaker nodded approvingly at Evelyn's modest demeanor. It was refreshing compared to the usual arrogance he encountered in the industry.
"Ms. Carter," Edmund said suddenly, "how would you feel about taking the lead designer position for this show?"
The room erupted in murmurs.
This was an unexpected turn. Edmund was clearly showing remarkable confidence in Evelyn. But was it wise to appoint someone so unproven?
Evelyn opened her mouth to respond, but others beat her to it.
"Professor Whitaker," someone interjected, "with all due respect, Ms. Carter lacks sufficient experience for such a high-profile project."
"Exactly!" another voice chimed in. "Cassandra would be far more suitable. She's handled numerous successful projects with flawless execution."
"Cassandra's design aesthetic is truly unique. Among our peers, her skills are unparalleled."
The consensus was clear - everyone favored Cassandra Winslow over Evelyn.
This wasn't surprising. Most only knew Evelyn through industry gossip and speculation. How could they trust an unknown designer with such an important event?
If the show failed, it would reflect poorly on everyone involved.
"Professor, please reconsider!" several voices urged.
Cassandra exhaled quietly, some tension leaving her shoulders. Yet she remained composed, carefully studying Edmund's expression before speaking up.
Olivia Sinclair, listening to the debate, nudged Evelyn. "This is getting intense! Aren't you interested?"
Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "We'll see," she murmured.
Large-scale fashion shows meant grueling work. Was she ready for that commitment?
Edmund raised a hand to quiet the room. "For this event, I want everyone's participation. However," he continued, "the lead designer position remains open for discussion. Any suggestions?"
At this, Cassandra's eyes lit up with anticipation. This was the opportunity she'd been waiting for.
The room fell silent as people exchanged hesitant glances. No one dared volunteer - the role demanded exceptional skill and experience.
"Professor..." Cassandra finally broke the silence. "I'd like to put myself forward for consideration."
Edmund made a noncommittal sound, neither agreeing nor refusing.
Cassandra pressed her lips together, disappointment flickering across her face. Five years studying under Edmund. Countless successful designs. Surely she was qualified?
Yet Edmund seemed reluctant to give her the chance.
"Ms. Carter," Edmund suddenly addressed Evelyn again, redirecting all attention to her. "What are your thoughts?"
The room's atmosphere shifted instantly - confusion, surprise, and not a little envy directed at Evelyn.
