Chapter 188
The accelerator met the floor beneath Cassandra's stiletto.
A dark urge pulsed through her veins - to erase Evelyn Carter from existence.
If only that woman vanished, the Pamore fashion show's lead designer position would unquestionably be hers.
No one could steal what rightfully belonged to her then.
Her knuckles whitened around the steering wheel.
Just as she prepared to act, a sleek Bentley cut off Evelyn's vehicle, forcing Cassandra to slam her brakes.
Nathan Sterling had dispatched Simon to track Evelyn's location before racing across town himself.
Before the car fully stopped, he threw open the door.
Evelyn's lips thinned. Nathan clung to her like some persistent shadow.
"Evelyn!"
His voice cracked with emotion when he saw her.
He needed to atone. To make right every wrong he'd committed during their marriage.
"Mr. Sterling," she drawled, examining her manicure, "don't you have companies to run? Board meetings to attend?"
His jaw tightened. "Evelyn... what's past is past. I was thinking... perhaps we could be friends?"
A disbelieving laugh escaped her.
Was this some twisted joke?
Nathan Sterling wanted friendship?
"Have you been drinking? Or did you finally lose what little sense you had left?"
His gaze burned into her. "Hear me out! Isabella manipulated everything between us. She's facing consequences now. I've cut all ties with her. I want to start fresh with you—"
Evelyn's laughter cut him off.
"Mr. Sterling, you mistake me for someone who collects friends like your mother collects designer handbags. My standards are considerably higher."
The rejection stung, but he pressed on. "Isn't Isabella's removal enough? Can't we—"
"You still don't understand." Evelyn's smile turned glacial. "The problem was never just Isabella. It was you."
She leaned forward, each word a scalpel. "For three years, you were less a husband than a negligent stranger. You let Eleanor and Vanessa torment me. Allowed rumors to flourish. Never once defended me."
His breath hitched as she continued.
"You flaunted your affair publicly. Left me bleeding in an alley. Stole three years of my life and made me regret every second."
The words left her chest hollow.
Nathan had destroyed their marriage with his own hands.
Extinguished every spark of love through relentless neglect.
And now?
He thought a half-baked apology could undo it all?
How laughable.
Some wounds never healed.
The window slid up as Evelyn accelerated away, leaving Nathan standing in a cloud of exhaust.
