Chapter 216

Alexander smiled. Indeed. It's quite impressive.

After speaking, he glanced at her. "Shouldn't you be working on your exhibition pieces? What brings you here?"

"Well," she shrugged, "I didn't want you thinking I'm neglecting my hosting duties."

"Go focus on your art," he waved dismissively. "Don't distract me from the game."

Yet Nathaniel remained.

When the Kensingtons heard Alexander and Nathaniel praising Victoria, proud smiles spread across their faces.

Many guests recognized Victoria, their expressions a mix of admiration and envy.

Victoria possessed both beauty and intellect. Now her chess skills had captured the attention of Nathaniel and Alexander.

Moreover, her charm had won Alexander's affection, elevating the Kensingtons' social standing effortlessly.

What parent wouldn't desire such a daughter?

"Your daughter and granddaughter are truly remarkable," one guest remarked enviously to the Kensingtons.

"Absolutely!" others chimed in. "How did you raise such an accomplished young woman? Lady Kensington, Mrs. Kensington, we'd love to hear your secrets."

Soon, a circle of society ladies surrounded the Kensingtons.

The lavish praise for Victoria made Penelope beam with pride.

She shot a glance at Isabella, whispering smugly to Genevieve, "She's clearly no match for Victoria, is she?" Eleanor's expression darkened at the comparison between her daughter and Isabella.

Beatrice and Reginald overheard Penelope's remark.

Their gazes shifted to Isabella.

Victoria outshone Isabella in every conceivable way.

They turned back to Victoria, their eyes filled with adoration.

Just then, Victoria stood. Facing Alexander, she said gracefully, "My apologies, I lost."

Alexander smiled warmly. "The outcome matters little. You performed exceptionally. Not everyone can match that young man from the Whitmores. Besides," he added, "it's rare to find someone as scholarly and skilled at chess as you."

Flattered, Victoria smiled. "You're too kind, Mr. Whitmore."

"Care for another match?" Alexander offered.

Victoria shook her head. "One attempt suffices. Let others have their turn."

Alexander scanned the room. "Would anyone else like to try?"

Julian's gaze flicked to Alexander, catching him holding a chess piece while staring intently.

At that moment, Isabella stepped forward. Meeting Alexander's eyes directly, she asked, "Shall we play a game?"

Alexander froze momentarily, studying her.

Shocked, Julian turned to stare at Isabella.

He couldn't believe she'd openly challenge Alexander to chess in this setting.

Julian wasn't the only surprised one. The Kensingtons, especially Victoria, looked utterly astonished. She'd never expected such boldness from Isabella.

Given Isabella's usual reserved nature, Victoria assumed she'd never publicly request a chess match with Alexander.

Yet here she was.

The Kensingtons frowned collectively.

Beatrice muttered, "I should have warned her beforehand if I'd known she'd pull this stunt."
