Chapter 88
Emily said seriously, "I know what I'm talking about."
James sighed and said, "Alright, if you want to bring him back for treatment, I'll arrange for someone to pick him up."
Emily never expected James to send a private helicopter.
But it was a good thing. It would take over three hours to get to the central hospital in the city by car, but the helicopter would be much faster.
As they boarded the helicopter, John looked at Emily cautiously.
"Come with me," he said.
Emily got on the helicopter too.
On the helicopter, John struggled to keep his eyes open, his gaze fixed on Emily.
This accident was totally unexpected. When he saw something falling towards Emily's head, he rushed up without thinking.
John was relieved that it wasn't Emily who got hurt. In that moment,he was scared to death, and he realized his feelings for Emily completely.
He loved Emily more than he had imagined. No matter what, he wouldn't give up on her. If Emily left him, it would feel as painful as being flayed alive. Regardless of the current relationship between Emily and James, he and Emily had over a decade of affec tion that wouldn't be easily severed. When they arrived at the hospital, John was wheeled in for treatment. He had a broken rib that had punctured the edge of his lung and needed surgery.
The doctor said if they had arrived any later, the rib would have punctured the lung completely and it would have been fatal.
Upon hearing this, Emily realized that surgery was necessary. She arranged for John to be admitted.
Shortly after, John was taken to the operating room while Emily signed the consent form.
After seeing to everything, an hour had passed, and John was wheeled out of the operating room. It was time for Emily to leave..
"Emmy, will you come to see me tomorrow?" John asked.
Emily furrowed her brow, looked at his pale face, and replied calmly, "I'm grateful to you for saving me. If you want compensation, I can give it to you, but please don't think about anything else."
John felt like his heart was being laid bare by her words. Emily had always known what he was thinking. This made John feel embarrassed.
He had to change the subject forcefully, "Can you not tell dad and mom about the injury for now? I don't want them to worry."
Emily nodded. "I'll find a caregiver for you."
John might not be able to leave the hospital for a while.
As she walked out of the ward, she ran into James in the corridor outside.
James was still angry, with a grim expression, but he asked, "How is John?" "He just finished surgery. The rib punctured his lung," Emily replied.
James smirked. "That's quite a cost."
Emily gave him a look. "This is not the time to mock him."
They hadn't seen each other for several days. James stared at Emily, who was wearing a trench coat that accentuated hner slim waist, making her look both cold and fierce.
James knew the likelihood of John intentionally orchestrating this was slim, but the incident had entangled the two again.
Moreover. Emily scolded and reprimanded him for John's sake!
Just the thought of it made James very angry. And he couldn't make a fuss in front of Emily.
Even at their most intimate moments, Emily was always clear-headed. She had always been thinking about distancing herself from him.
These days,James was both looking forward to and dreading her call.
He was terrified that Emily would say, "This is the end for us."
James came today to make things right. With a hint of a smile, he said, "T'm not that heartless. I'll find a caregiver to look after him."
Emily just nodded.James took her hand, noticing she didn't pull away, and said with a faint smile, "TIl cook tonight. How about we have dinner at my place?" Emily had been staying elsewhere for almost a week. She really liked James's cooking, but he was usually too busy to cook.
She looked at James. "I have to go back to the Williams Mansion tonight."
James's face fell.
Emily raised her head, kissed him on the corner of his lips, and pinched his cheek. "I'll be back later tonight."
James's eyes lit up instantly, and he agreed.
After leaving the hospital, Emily went straight to the Williams Mansion.
She found a USB drive in the safe. There was only one audio file.
"John, let's break up. You're not good enough for me. Everything you do is so mediocre. And after all these years together, you can't even kiss properly. It's more comfortable to sleep with Philip, who is better than you in every way. Philip doesn't mind that I'm no longer a virgin. What's more,he's very good to me."
The voice sounded like hers, but it was definitely manipulated. Emily was sure she had never said such things.
And Philip Mitchell was their college counselor, someone she still respected.
But the voice message didn't mention much about that incident. Just the mention of a Philip was enough to shatter John's confidence. John had always been a very sensitive person. After taking the USB drive, Emily left the Williams Mansion without even having dinner. What exactly had happened during that time? She had been suddenly gone for several days for so long, and why hadn't she left any clues
The Johnson family didn't care about her, so it was Calliope who had reported her missing. During that period, she hadn't had much to eat or gotten much sleep, which had really worn her out..
She had returned home unexpectedly. Yet, she couldn't remember anything about her kidnapping, leaving the police with no leads to track down the criminal.
Driving through the city streets, Emily knew her depression was flaring up and she couldn't drive anymore.
She parked the car on the side of the road. Memories were absent, but fear lingered, gnawing at her like maggots.
Emily had even felt like she had been poisoned. She had undergone toxicology tests, and the doctor had said, "It's been too long. We won't find anything now."
Emily was trembling uncontrollably, her body drenched in cold sweat.
Her depression came with severe symptoms. Since the day she was violated, she had been haunted by nightmares of being trapped in a dark room with thin air.
After running out, she had looked to John as her beacon of hope, but he had started to distance himself from her. starting to get better, John abandoned her at the wedding.
Everyone laughed at her, and her parents didn't want her.
After the wedding, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder on top of her depression. She wouldn't like anyone anymore. She didn't even know what liking someone felt like.
All that remained inside her was fear, but she hid it behind a facade of openness and nonchalance every day.
There was a ticking time bomb buried deep within her heart.
