Chapter 87
Emily could barely keep John upright. "John, are you alright? Is there a medical team around?"
John winced in pain, hunched over with blood trickling from his mouth. He couldn't get a word out.
Emily figured he might have internal injuries and quickly called for help.
A staff member rushed over, looking worried. "Mr. Williams, are you okay?

Most of the folks here were from CloudDream Creations, so they were naturally concerned about him.
The crane operator hurried over too. "What happened?"
The staff member pointed at him. "What did you do? You've hurt Mr.Williams."
John was quickly taken to the medical team. But since this place was newly set up, there was only one doctor.
The doctor could only provide basic treatment for now. John's shirt was cut open, revealing a swollen back with a nasty bruise.
With the doctor's help, John stopped coughing up blood for the moment.
Given the limited resources, the doctor said, "Mr. WVilliams needs an X-ray to check for internal inuries or broken bones. You should get him to a big hospital ASAP."
Emily immediately said. "I'll have my driver take you to the hospital in my car."
John lay there quietly for a bit before saying, "I'm fine. I don't think I have any internal injuries. I just need to rest here for a while."
Emily frowned. "John, this isn't something to take lightly."
She looked at his back, feeling conflicted.
No matter what. John had saved her. Even if she wasn't thrilled with him,she couldn't just ignore him. But John was being stubborn.
Just as Emily was about to lose her cool, a staff member nearby awkwardly spoke up, "Ms. Johnson. Mr. Williams is also under the Golden Birch Group's requirements. They need him on the front line, and he can't leave unless absolutely necessary."
He added. "Mr. Williams has only been here a few days. If he takes leave just to see a doctor, it might look bad to the Golden Birch Group."
The CloudDream Creations didn't want to risk losing this hard-earned business deal.
Emily paused, thinkingit must be James's doing. No one else had that kind of authority.
Emily stayed silent.
John spoke up, "Jamesis probably worried I'll bother you."
The staff member hesitated. "Ms. Johnson, we know you're Mr. Smith's girlfriend. Could you help with getting him leave? Otherwise,it's really hard to explain."
Emily hesitated but couldn't stand seeing John's pale face.
Wilder and Calliope actually cared a lot about John. If something happened to him, she wouldn't be able to face them.
Emily stayed calm. "You go to the hospital for treatment first, and I'll talk to James about the rest."
Then she walked out and dialed a familiar number.
James picked up almost immediately, sounding a bit surprised. "Why are you calling me out of the blue?"
They hadn't been in touch for days. James had wanted to meet Emily when she submitted the design drafts, but her assistant handled it instead. The assistant even sent the email without coming to the Golden Birch Group.
Emily whispered, "I'm at the construction site on the east side of the city.John got hurt, so I want to help him get leave and get back to the city center for treatment."
There was a dead silence on the other end of the phone. Emily could practically feel the tension radiating from James.
After a few seconds, James finally spoke, "You haven't contacted me these past few days, nor have you come home. Is it because you're with John?"
Emily felt a surge of annoyance. "James, I'm talking about something important here."
James let out a bitter laugh. "Why are you the one asking for leave on his behalf? Can't he do it himself?"
His last sentence was dripping with barely contained anger.Emily explained. "Something fell from the crane, and John saved me."
James laughed, but it was more out of frustration. "How long have you two been apart? Why does a designer like youneed to be at a construction site? And how do you know he's not just playing the victim?"
Emily went quiet for a moment. She glanced at John, who was wincing in pain, his lips pale.
Despite his flaws, John had a good heart.
Plus, construction sites were dangerous. One wrong move could be fatal.
John wasn't that devious. If he were, he wouldn't have been fooled by Veda for so long. He was just self-centered and arrogant.
Most importantly, she had come here on a whim. She didn't know John would be at the site, and he didn't know she was coming. It was pure coincidence.
"No, he isn't. You're overthinking it."
James sneered. "Emily, what makes you so sure?"
Emily didn't hesitate. "Because I know John."
She sighed, took a few steps away, and said, "James, you don't need to act like this. Helping him take leave doesn't mean there's anything between us.I've told you before, I won't reconcile with him. John is just a estranged acquaintance to me now . You don't have to target him because of this." "How am I targeting him?" Emily could sense the calm before the storm in James's voice. But some things needed to be made clear, even if James didn't want to hear them.
"You made him, a CEO, stay on the construction site. What about the follow-up work? It's a bit much that he's not allowed to go back."
James laughed, his voice colder. "Do John's complaints easily win you over? When I beg you, you don't even look back. He's so special to you!"
Emily frowned, her voice tinged with frustration. "John didn't complain. If it wasn't for you targeting him, I wouldn't bother meddling with your decision. Mixing a big project like the jewelry exhibition with personal grievances doesn't seem like your style."
She continued, "Most importantly, you've dragged me into this. If it were someone else today, would you be so difficult to talk to? James, it's you who's making me feel a bit guilty towards John."
James's voice erupted in anger. "Emily, do you know what you're saying?"
Emily was very clear that if someone else had saved her today,James would only be grateful.
She had never thought of getting back together with John. But James didn't believe it.
After all the time spent with James, Emily was starting to feel confused. The three rules seemed to no longer exist. Did their relationship really need to continue? If they kept going like this, it would be hard for them to end well.
