Chapter 76
As soon as John dropped those words, the room went dead silent.Everyone looked stunned, not quite getting how John could say something like that.
Calliope used to think John was under Veda's spell, but now she was starting to feel like she hadn't raised him right.
Feeling a mix of heartbreak and anger, Calliope slapped John hard.
Calliope always tried to keep up a good image in front of others, but today she just couldn't hold it in. The slap was heavy, leaving her palm red and her body shaking.
Calliope spoke slowly and deliberately, "How could I have a son like you?You defamed Emmy. Empty words carry no weight. You grew up together;don't you know what kind of person she is?"
Struggling to stay steady by leaning on the table, Calliope started to cry.
John tightened his lips, his face stinging with pain. That slap felt like a punch to his heart. He knew he was wrong, but he didn't want to admit it.
With the last bit of his pride, he didn't want to lose face in front of Emily and James.
John pursed his lips, feeling a strong dryness in his throat, and finally said,"Mom, I broke up with Veda and can be with Emily again." Emily's face darkened as she glanced at the wine glass beside her. Unable to hold back, she splashed the wine on John's face. "John, you're such a hypocrite!" In front of the Williams family, Emily didn't want to be too harsh with her words. She stood up, took James's hand, and said to the others, "Grandpa,Mom,Dad,we're leaving now."
In a daze, Calliope quickly grabbed her hand and choked out,"Emmy, wait,I have something for you."
She took Emily upstairs, leaving James waiting outside.
John sat in the living room for a while, but no one wanted to talk to him.He thought of something and went outside.
The garden was full of colorful and fragrant flowers planted by Emily before.
James stood in front of an orchid, his slender fingertips gently playing with it, making him look extremely noble.
John rarely felt a sense of inferiority. In front of James, John didn't stand a chance of winning Emily back.
James saw him coming from the corner of his eye, his gaze deep and distant. He stood there like a god looking down on all beings.
"Mr. Williams, what's up?" John pressed on with his words, "We didn't get the certificate back then due to a misunderstanding. As long as I make it clear, Emmy will definitely choose me."
James's expression turned colder, and he said icily, "Mr. Williams, you seem to think too highly of yourself. Since you gave up on Emmy back then, she won't choose you now. You should understand Emmy's character."
John's fists clenched instantly.
"Mr.Smith, marriage certificate don't mean a thing. In my heart,Emily and I are married. She must feel the same way, or she wouldn't have waited for me for three years!"
A sharp glint flashed in James's eyes. At the start, Emily did tell him she cared a lot about John and their friendship, and that she had been waiting for John to come back.
James's gaze turned a bit sharper, but he kept a casual expression."She's been with me for these three years."
John's composure cracked a bit. His expression turned cold as he said directly, "I still love her, and I won't give up on her. There are plenty of women after you. Why bother competing with me? I hope you won't interfere in my relationship with Emmy. I'll spend my whole life making it up to her," James was furious at his confidence. "John, you're both foolish and arrogant. A few words from others made you doubt the feelings between you two for over a decade. And now you claim you love her? Mrs.Williams was right. Why do you think Emmy will always wait for you?Why do you think I'm not indispensable to Emily?" The autumn evening breeze carried a chill that slowly seeped into John's bones, making his body stiffen. James was serious about Emily!
Meanwhile, Emily was led by Calliope to the study, where she opened a safe.
Emily was a bit puzzled. She was already wearing the Williams family's heirloom jewelry and didn't expect anything more.
The Williams family had been too kind to her, and she felt pressured.
Calliope took out a red velvet box from the safe; inside was a necklace.
Calliope handed it directly to Emily and said, "I heard that this necklace was given by a mysterious person on the day of the party after I picked you up, and that person said he was from the Patterson family, and I thought about it, and it was only the Patterson family of Starry Capital."
This necklace was not particularly valuable to them. The valuable thing was that the necklace had the Patterson family's family pattern, which was only a serious super rich family that had existed for hundreds of years.
She continued, "Mia didn't intend to give it to you; she wanted to give it to Veda. I had a word with her, so she had no choice but to give you this necklace. I've kept it in the safe ever since."
Mia had always been biased. No matter what good things come along.Veda is always the first on her mind. Calliope couldn't stand it. The necklace wasn't particularly valuable to them, but the emblem of the Mellon family on it was significant. Only a true super elite family that had existed for over a hundred years would have such an emblem. How could this not be considered a stroke of luck? Emily examined the necklace for a while. The intricate emblem looked very profound.
Moreover, the necklace seemed to be a pair, but no one knew where the other half was.
Mia probably wasn't interested in the necklace itself, but in the emblem.
Emily hesitated.
But Calliope said, "I didn't plan to give this to you so soon, but Mia has been hinting about this necklace for the past few days. Take it; it's yours."
