Chapter 86
Liam approached Evelyn with an intense gaze that sent shivers down her spine.
Without warning, he leaned in closer.
Evelyn instinctively recoiled, losing her balance and tumbling backward onto the bed. Her heart pounded violently against her ribs.
Liam kneeled on the mattress, caging her between his arms as he stared down at her.
His masculine scent enveloped Evelyn, making her breathing uneven. A mix of nervousness and confusion swirled within her.
"Tell me, darling," Liam murmured with dangerous playfulness, "Do you prefer to be on top or beneath me?"
"That's not what I meant at all!" Evelyn's face drained of color. Why did his teasing words carry such underlying seriousness?
"You've been... distant ever since I left the lab." Evelyn swallowed hard. "You barely speak to me anymore."
Liam's lips curved into a smirk. "The successful extraction of pure Azurium saved me millions and advanced our technology. Why wouldn't I be pleased?"
"Then is it my identity you doubt again?" Evelyn challenged. "Is that why you're acting this way?"
"My doubts about you never ceased," Liam hummed in response.
Evelyn frowned, shooting him a displeased look while trying to decipher his expression.
Seeing her distress, Liam softened his tone. "Stop overthinking. I'm not unhappy. Quite the opposite—I'm thrilled. But I need time to process everything you've revealed, understand?"
Evelyn shook her head in confusion.
"No matter. Get some rest." Liam gestured to the clock. "It's already one in the morning."
Evelyn sighed. "I can't sleep."
Liam's eyes darkened with promise. "Perhaps some... physical activity would help tire you out? After I shower?"
Evelyn immediately squeezed her eyes shut, cheeks flaming. "I'm exhausted."
Liam's lips pressed into a thin line as he stood, frustration evident in his movements. Her constant rejections stung—who was she saving herself for?
The sound of running water filled the room as Liam showered. When he returned, the lights were off and Evelyn appeared asleep. He slipped into bed, maintaining careful distance between them.
Previously, sharing a bed with Evelyn hadn't affected him. Now, his desire for her grew more unbearable each night.
Another sleepless night awaited him.
Morning sunlight streaming through the curtains roused Evelyn from sleep.
She rubbed her eyes, blinking away sleep's remnants. The other side of the bed lay empty, sheets neatly folded.
Without Liam's presence, an odd emptiness settled in Evelyn's chest—an unpleasant sensation she couldn't shake.
After completing her morning routine and changing from pajamas, Evelyn left the room, her hair cascading freely over her shoulders.
She nearly collided with Victoria, who leaned casually against the hallway wall.
Victoria crossed her arms, exuding confidence and authority.
Evelyn regarded her with wary curiosity.
Victoria clicked her tongue mockingly. "Impressive. You're the camp's newest celebrity."
Evelyn ignored the barb. "He's not here if that's who you're waiting for."
Victoria snorted. "Who said I wanted Liam? I was waiting for you."
Evelyn froze.
Victoria seeking her out? Nothing good could come from this. Evelyn braced herself for whatever schemes the other woman might have concocted.
