Chapter 216
"What?" Evelyn's voice trembled with disbelief.
"Let's divorce." Liam's words cut through the air like a knife.
His expression darkened instantly, the temperature in the room dropping several degrees. He took slow, deliberate steps toward her until she found herself backing against the wall.
"I don't have time for divorce proceedings," he said through clenched teeth. "Ask for anything else."
Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, her emerald eyes flashing with fury. "Why didn't I see what a liar you were sooner? We would've ended this farce if Adrian hadn't been in danger last time! It's barely been a week - what changed?"
Liam studied her flushed face, suppressing the storm of emotions raging inside him. "I did change my mind," he admitted calmly. "If you want a divorce, you'll have to recover your memories first."
He took a steadying breath before continuing. "If after remembering everything you still don't want to be my wife, we'll part ways. But if your memories change your mind-"
The unspoken words hung between them. After a heavy pause, he finished quietly, "Then we remain husband and wife."
Her hands balled into fists at her sides, her entire body shaking with barely contained rage. Hot tears spilled down her cheeks despite her efforts to stop them.
"Are you insane, Liam? Do you get off on playing these games? Wouldn't it be easier to just be with Victoria openly?"
Her voice broke as she continued, "Why keep me trapped in this marriage? I refuse to be the pathetic joke between you two! Does cheating make it more exciting for you?"
Liam recoiled as if struck, his face draining of color.
Evelyn bit her lip hard enough to draw blood, angrily swiping at her tears. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her break.
"If you won't agree to divorce amicably, I'll see you in court," she spat, pushing past him toward the door.
He moved faster, his hand closing around her wrist like a steel trap. "Evelyn, don't do this."
She jerked away like his touch burned, her fight-or-flight instincts kicking in. "Let go of me, Liam! I hate you!"
The words hit him like a physical blow. He stood frozen, his world crumbling around him. The pain was worse than any battlefield wound - a gaping hole where his heart should be, making it impossible to breathe.
Knife wounds healed in days. Bullet wounds in weeks. But this agony had haunted him for years, resurfacing when he was most vulnerable. The kind of pain that didn't kill you but made you wish it would.
Hearing her say she hated him shattered whatever remained of his composure.
"Tell me what I'm doing wrong," he pleaded, his voice raw. "I'll fix it. But don't accuse me of things I haven't done. There was no affair. No cheating."
Evelyn would never believe him again. Not after his promise to cut ties with Victoria - only to summon her to the military base knowing Evelyn would be there.
What kind of game was he playing?
Did ex-lovers normally embrace like that? Did he think she was stupid?
Tears streamed down her face as she glared up at him. Trapped in his grip, she demanded, "Why won't you let me go, Liam? What do you want from me?"
