Chapter 215

If he exposed her true identity before capturing Julian and the imposter, Evelyn would face even greater danger as the sole heir to the Wright family.

Liam was burning with curiosity. What exactly did Cassandra do for a living?

What kind of job required her to secretly change nationalities and cut off contact with her family for ten months every year? She couldn't even return to the country for a decade.

"Ms. Wright, what was Cassandra's previous occupation?"

Margaret gave him a knowing smile. "Aren't you two inseparable these days? Why don't you ask her yourself?"

Liam returned an awkward smile. "She refuses to tell me."

"Not just you," Margaret sighed. "Even her uncle and parents never knew what she was doing. The pay was terrible, and she worked herself to the bone. But one thing's certain - she worked for the Solterra government."

A government job requiring such secrecy? The only possibility that came to mind was Alexander's position - an undercover operative.

But something still didn't add up.

After some polite conversation, Liam escorted Margaret out of the study.

When they passed through the living room, Evelyn was no longer on the sofa.

His pulse quickened as he scanned the area. After seeing Margaret out, he questioned Ryan standing guard at the entrance about Evelyn's whereabouts.

Ryan confirmed she hadn't left the residence.

Liam rushed back inside, taking the stairs two at a time. He threw open the master bedroom door with urgent force.

The sudden intrusion startled the woman inside. Evelyn scrambled up from the pile of books, studying his expression with cautious apprehension.

"I... I found these books. Haven't had time to read them yet. Just wanted to borrow a few."

Liam's chest constricted. A bittersweet smile twisted his lips as his eyes grew moist.

The woman he loved remained unchanged - still reserved, resilient, and hungry for knowledge, just like in her youth.

What had he been thinking before? How could he have failed to recognize her and caused her so much pain?

He closed the door gently and approached.

"You're welcome to read them here," he said softly.

Evelyn set the book down. "I've been staying with Rosalind lately, as you know."

He exhaled in frustration.

She met his gaze nervously. "Did you want to say something when you asked me to stay?"

Liam shoved his hands in his pockets, at a loss for words.

There was so much he couldn't say or do. The situation was too complicated to know what was appropriate.

Reading his troubled expression, she forced calm into her voice. "It's really not that hard to say. I understand completely."

Liam frowned. Understand what?

"We should finalize the divorce soon," she continued. "That way you and Victoria can be together openly."

His frown deepened. "What do you mean 'openly'?"

Why was he still pretending? She'd seen and heard everything.

Since he couldn't forget Victoria, divorce was the simplest solution.

Evelyn offered a pained smile, inhaling sharply as her chest constricted with hurt.

"I visited Grandma two days ago. She's lost all cognitive function. Doesn't recognize anyone, her thoughts are completely jumbled. She's becoming incoherent. The symptoms are worsening rapidly."

His heart sank.

"You should visit when you have time."

"Okay," he agreed.

"When are you free?"
