Chapter 156
Evelyn's voice trembled with desperation as she pleaded, "I'm begging you, Liam. Please... don't let my love for you turn into regret. I can't take this anymore—"
Before she could finish, Liam grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
Pressed against his chest, Evelyn stiffened, her pulse racing. The sudden closeness left her breathless.
Liam inhaled the delicate floral scent of her hair, the pain in his chest easing. For the first time in weeks, he wanted to hold her like this forever.
His lips brushed her ear as he whispered, "You married me because you loved me. And I... I want a future with you. Every word I said was true."
He exhaled shakily. "Yes, I cared for Victoria once, but that's over. I understand women, Evelyn. But if my presence hurts you, tell me. Just don't say 'divorce' again."
The word alone felt like a blade twisting in his ribs.
Maybe it was the warmth of his embrace or the raw honesty in his voice, but Evelyn's tears spilled over. "But you love her," she choked out. "You still love Victoria."
Liam cradled her face, pressing a kiss to her damp hair. "Never. I never loved her. At most, we were like siblings."
Evelyn clenched her fists, shoving against him. "Liar! You told me you loved her!"
Afraid she'd slip away, Liam tightened his hold. "I didn't. Stop this."
"You did!" Her voice cracked. "You texted me confessing your love for her! You said we should end things! You're a liar, Liam! A cheater!"
His grip loosened in shock. Gently, he wiped her tears with his thumbs. "You're right. I've been terrible. But show me that message, sweetheart."
"I deleted it!" she sobbed.
"Was it the day you asked for divorce papers?"
At her nod, realization dawned. "That day, a maid at Wright Manor spilled water on my phone. Victoria took it to dry—she must've sent that text. God, she's relentless."
Evelyn's tear-filled eyes widened.
Liam was mesmerized by the way her lashes glistened, her cheeks flushed from crying. She looked heartbreakingly beautiful.
Unable to stand her distress, he pulled her close again, resting his chin atop her head. Relief washed over him—now he understood why she'd wanted to leave.
"Don't cry," he murmured. "Let's talk this through. We've both been hurting each other without realizing it."
