Chapter 439

Christopher Montgomery's name was on the guest list! Evelyn Carter blinked, certain her eyes were playing tricks on her.

But he hadn’t mentioned anything about attending. Could it be someone else with the same name?

Skeptical, she tried calling him, but the line rang endlessly.

Odd.

It had to be a coincidence, she told herself.

Evelyn took one last glance around the hall, ensuring every detail was flawless. Only then did the tension in her chest ease.

"Evelyn Carter, how dare you show your face here?"

The sharp voice made her turn. Beatrice Harrington and Victoria Sinclair strode in, arms linked like conspirators.

Victoria wore a smug smirk. Though she hadn’t been able to stop the property settlement, Beatrice certainly could.

Nathaniel would never defy his own mother, would he?

The sight of Evelyn ignited Beatrice’s fury, especially after Victoria’s poisonous whispers about the agreement.

At that moment, Beatrice wished Evelyn would simply disappear.

"Who do you think you are?" Beatrice spat. "You should’ve slunk away after the divorce. How dare you lay claim to Nathaniel’s fortune? Are you out of your mind?"

Evelyn had expected this the moment she spotted Beatrice.

Victoria wasn’t clever enough to scheme on her own—she always hid behind Beatrice’s wrath.

Unfazed, Evelyn arched a brow. "You’ve got it backward, Mrs. Harrington. Your son signed that agreement first. If you have a problem, take it up with him."

"Don’t lie to me!" Beatrice jabbed a finger at her. "You manipulated him into signing it. Over my dead body will you get a single cent!"

Evelyn crossed her arms. "Victoria already ripped up the document yesterday. Nathaniel promised me another copy. If you want to stop this, go talk to him. He’s the one insisting."

"Don’t forget what you signed when you married him," Beatrice sneered, thrusting a yellowed paper at her. "A divorce agreement. You forfeited all rights to his assets. Dream all you want—you’ll never touch a penny!"

Evelyn stared at the document, memories flooding back.

Back then, she’d been desperate to save Nathaniel, willing to sign anything. Now, she wished she could shake her past self—warn her that pitying a man like him was the beginning of her downfall.

People like Nathaniel didn’t get hurt. They did the hurting.

Victoria smirked. "That’s just a copy, by the way. Don’t even think about destroying it."

Evelyn’s lips curled. "Not everyone resorts to petty tricks like you."

Victoria’s face twitched. Beatrice snapped, "Victoria’s right. That agreement never should’ve existed. Thank goodness she tore it."

Evelyn laughed. "This divorce agreement means nothing. Nathaniel wants to give me his property. What can you possibly do about it?"

Beatrice’s face darkened. "Mark my words, Evelyn Carter—this isn’t over. I’ll deal with my son myself. Victoria, let’s go!"
