Chapter 416
"Andrew Montgomery." Nathaniel Whitmore said.
"Another Montgomery?" Gregory Thornton raised an eyebrow. "You mentioned Evelyn's closeness to Julian before. Could the Montgomerys have some hidden agenda against your family?"
Nathaniel swirled his wine glass before taking a sip. "Not against my family. Against Evelyn herself."
"Let me tell you something, Nate," Gregory leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "If you've developed feelings for Evelyn—and considering you two haven't finalized the divorce yet—it wouldn't be hard to keep her by your side."
"After all, she used to worship the ground you walked on, playing the perfect devoted wife. If you just show her a little attention, won’t she come running back?"
Nathaniel’s mind flashed to Evelyn’s recent words: "If you replace your boyfriend fast enough, you won’t have time to be sad."
"As long as your new man measures up, you’ll forget your ex in no time."
His jaw tightened. "She’s not that easily swayed anymore."
Ever since Nathaniel had brought up divorce, Evelyn had transformed into someone unrecognizable—distant, untouchable.
Gregory clicked his tongue. "Are you seriously considering coaxing her back? Just admit it—you’ve fallen for her."
The truth was painfully obvious.
Nathaniel cleared his throat. "I just think whether we divorce or not doesn’t matter much."
"Grandmother Eleanor adores her, and I don’t have strong feelings about marriage either way. It’s not a big deal."
Gregory scoffed. "You’re lying to yourself. If you truly felt that way, why file for divorce in the first place?"
Nathaniel hesitated. "At the time, I thought keeping Evelyn tied to the Whitmore name for three years was unfair."
"A woman like her shouldn’t waste her life in a loveless marriage. She deserved a fresh start."
Gregory countered immediately, "Then why are you stopping her from leaving now?"
He couldn’t understand Nathaniel’s stubborn denial.
Setting his wine glass down, Nathaniel finally admitted, "Because Evelyn is pregnant."
Gregory choked on his drink, coughing violently as he gaped at Nathaniel. "Yours?"
Nathaniel’s expression darkened. "Probably not."
"What do you mean, probably not? Wait—are you saying the baby is Julian’s?" Gregory’s voice rose in disbelief. "With all this, shouldn’t you be speeding up the divorce? Why would you want to deal with this mess?"
Nathaniel shrugged, feigning indifference. "I don’t care about the child."
"Before, I lied about Evelyn being pregnant to convince Grandmother Eleanor to undergo surgery."
"Now that she’s recovering, the truth about the fake pregnancy would’ve come out eventually. But now, Evelyn is actually pregnant."
"Even if the child isn’t mine, I can overlook it—for Grandmother’s sake."
Gregory stared at him like he’d lost his mind. "Nathaniel, are you serious?"
Signing divorce papers was one thing. But willingly raising another man’s child? That was something else entirely.
It was clear—Nathaniel still loved Evelyn.
No man would endure this if he didn’t.
Ignoring Gregory’s shock, Nathaniel checked his phone and saw a missed call from Evelyn. He didn’t return it.
His lips thinned. She was probably calling about the divorce agreement they’d discussed earlier.
Gregory leaned closer. "Who called? Evelyn?"
"Yeah. I didn’t answer."
Nathaniel stared at his screen, his voice low and hesitant. "…Should I call her back?"
