Chapter 387
415 BONGS
The phone kept ringing until the call finally connected. "Hello? Evelyn?"
Jonathan's voice was laced with wariness and disbelief.
Evelyn could hear the hesitation in his tone.
Her voice was icy. "I have footage of your mother attacking me at the hospital."
"Evelyn, I'm truly sorry about what happened. My mother is getting older, and she was just worried about me. She didn’t mean to lash out like that." Jonathan's tone softened with regret.
"If it wasn’t intentional, then why did the two of you flee?" Evelyn wasn’t buying his excuses. This mother-son pair had no boundaries.
Jonathan tried to negotiate. "Evelyn, how about this? I won’t press charges against your brother for hitting me, and you drop the case against my mother. We’ll call it even."
"Who told you it was my brother who hit you?" Evelyn’s voice remained cold. "I just found out it was my ex-husband, not my brother."
Jonathan was stunned. So it really was Evelyn’s ex-husband!
He scrambled to reason with her. "Evelyn, this is your family matter. Let’s just move on."
Evelyn laid out her terms. "That was my ex-husband, not my family. But if you want me to drop the charges against your mother, you’ll have to tell the police that it was my ex-husband who assaulted you."
"But back then, my eyes were covered when I was dragged away. And the person who hit me was wearing a mask. I have no proof," Jonathan muttered.
Evelyn reassured him. "Don’t worry about evidence. I’ll testify for you."
Jonathan was shocked by her words. It finally dawned on him—Evelyn was using him to trap her ex-husband!
The most dangerous thing is indeed a woman’s vengeance. How had he never realized how ruthless Evelyn could be?
But her ex-husband was capable of kidnapping and assault. He clearly wasn’t someone to mess with!
"Evelyn, it’s not that I don’t want to help you—"
"Jonathan, let’s be clear. This isn’t you helping me. It’s a transaction. Think it over tonight. I’ll be at the police station tomorrow. If you don’t show up, I’ll file charges against your mother." Without waiting for his response, she hung up.
Evelyn stared at her phone and exhaled sharply. She was certain Jonathan, the devoted mama’s boy, would agree to her terms.
She wasn’t sure if this would actually affect Nathaniel, but it was worth a shot.
After eating, exhaustion overwhelmed her, and she fell asleep almost instantly.
Christopher watched over her for a while before quietly returning to the living room. He sent a message to the family group chat: "Evelyn fell asleep right after dinner."
Andrew replied immediately: "I’ve already booked a new flight. I’ll handle this personally. That old woman isn’t getting away with this."
Sebastian chimed in: "I hacked into Jonathan’s company system. Found evidence of illegal activities and tax evasion. We can use it as leverage."
Alexander’s text was furious: "We need to teach those two a lesson. How dare they try to take advantage of Evelyn? Over my dead body."
Olivia wrote: "Victoria has been crying nonstop in front of Margaret. I’m worried Margaret won’t accept Evelyn if she comes home."
Ever since Victoria refused to give up her adopted status, she had clung to Margaret like a shadow. The implied threat was obvious.
Daniel’s message was blunt: "I always said Victoria was trouble. But no one listened. Now look at the mess we’re in."
