Chapter 204
Evelyn hesitated for a moment. "Julian, I don’t want anyone to know I’m pregnant—at least not until I’m officially divorced from Nathaniel."
Julian frowned, unable to comprehend her reasoning. "Why? Is the baby’s father going to cause trouble for you?"
She shook her head, her eyes pleading. "Just keep this between us, please."
Those wide, vulnerable eyes of hers were impossible to resist.
Julian caved in less than three minutes.
As her older brother, he couldn’t deny her this.
Years of guilt weighed on him. Evelyn rarely asked for anything, so how could he refuse?
His pride as her guardian? Irrelevant compared to her well-being.
He ruffled her hair gently. "Fine, I’ll keep your secret. But you have to promise me you’ll take care of yourself. If you feel unwell, you tell me immediately."
"I promise! That’s why I called you right away," Evelyn assured him.
Julian was the only one she trusted enough to insist on coming to Peace Hospital.
He arched a brow. "Speaking of which, who’s the guy who brought you here? An admirer? Not bad-looking, I’ll give him that."
She coughed. "You’re way off, Julian. That’s Jonathan Reeves—my boss and mentor."
"Ah, your boss." Julian assessed him with a critical eye. "Ambitious, I suppose. Potential, but nothing more."
In his opinion, Jonathan wasn’t nearly good enough for her.
Evelyn was extraordinary. No ordinary man could ever measure up.
If Jonathan was just running some small studio, Julian doubted his net worth was impressive. He mentally questioned the studio’s credibility.
Evelyn sighed. "Stop it, Julian."
His phone buzzed incessantly, but he ignored it.
Just then, Jonathan walked in. "Evelyn, you’re awake. How are you feeling?"
"Much better, thanks to you," she replied gratefully.
"Don’t mention it. You really scared me. Glad you’re okay."
Jonathan suddenly noticed the doctor’s icy glare.
Evelyn tugged Julian’s sleeve. "Julian."
Only then did he reluctantly look away. "Relax. I’m not going to eat him."
Jonathan blinked in surprise. "You’re her brother?"
He’d heard Evelyn was an orphan who had recently found her family.
The fact that her brother was a doctor intrigued him.
She nodded. "Yes, this is my third brother, Dr. Julian Montgomery."
Jonathan extended a hand eagerly. "Nice to meet you. I’m Jonathan Reeves."
Julian shook it with minimal enthusiasm. "Don’t try to charm me. You’re her boss, right? She collapsed from overwork. Lighten her workload—without cutting her pay."
"Julian!" Evelyn scolded, embarrassed by his bluntness.
Before he could respond, a nurse entered. "Dr. Montgomery, your sister is waiting for you in your office."
