Chapter 155

Evelyn maintained her composure despite Victoria’s biting remarks.

“Can’t I be here to check on Grandma Eleanor? Her surgery hasn’t been finalized yet.”

She didn’t mention that Julian was already searching for a specialist.

Still, she wanted to know if Nathaniel was aware of why Victoria’s brother couldn’t perform the operation.

Victoria’s smirk deepened. “Is that so? Well, you don’t need to worry anymore. My brother has agreed to operate on Grandma Eleanor.”

“The surgery will happen by the end of this month, and she’ll recover in no time.”

Evelyn froze for a second, then instinctively turned to Nathaniel. “Is that true?”

There wouldn’t be any last-minute complications, would there?

Nathaniel gave a curt nod. “She’s right. The surgery is scheduled for the end of the month.”

Evelyn lowered her gaze, murmuring, “That’s good. I hope everything goes smoothly for Grandma Eleanor.”

In a way, this was for the best.

Meanwhile, Victoria was practically glowing. She had thought she’d lost her chance entirely, but fate had handed her an opportunity instead.

This was perfect. With this, Evelyn would no longer be a threat to her.

She smirked, tilting her head at Nathaniel. “Come on, Nate. We should go tell Grandma Eleanor the good news.”

Evelyn couldn’t stay a second longer. She turned on her heel and strode toward the stairs.

Victoria watched her leave with a triumphant smile.

“Nate, let’s go.”

Nathaniel’s expression remained impassive as he said coolly, “Don’t tell Grandma yet. If she finds out, she might refuse the surgery.”

Victoria’s face darkened. “It can’t be that bad, can it? My brother is one of the best surgeons in the country.”

She had been terrified when Nathaniel was involved in that car accident.

But now, she was the one saving Eleanor’s life—begging Alexander and Sebastian to convince her brother to operate.

So why wasn’t Eleanor grateful?

Eleanor doted on Evelyn because she had saved Nathaniel’s life. Shouldn’t she treat Victoria better now that Victoria was saving hers?

A warning glint flashed in Nathaniel’s eyes. “Victoria, don’t push your luck.”

Instantly, Victoria shrank back, guilt flickering across her face. “Nate, relax. I won’t do anything reckless.”

“But I only managed to get Alexander and Sebastian to agree because I told them you were going to marry me. You heard what Sebastian said earlier.”

“I agreed to a fake engagement. That’s all this is—a transaction.”

“I know.” Victoria lowered her voice. “But even if it’s fake, we still need a ceremony to convince my brothers. Otherwise, they’ll start asking questions.”

“We have until the end of the month. If anything happens to Grandma Eleanor before then, we can’t afford to wait.”

As she gazed at Nathaniel, excitement thrummed through her. Once the engagement was official, it would be real. She wouldn’t let it stay fake.

By then, her brothers would stand by her, and Nathaniel would have no choice but to marry her.

But for now, she had to stay calm. She needed to make sure the engagement ceremony went off without a hitch.

“Of course, the engagement will proceed as planned,” Beatrice interjected, beaming as she linked arms with Victoria. “Eleanor’s doctor called earlier and mentioned your brother visited. This is wonderful news!”

“As for your engagement, don’t worry. Nothing will go wrong. You can even invite your brothers to witness it.”

Victoria smiled sweetly, but her eyes held something far more complicated.

Evelyn stormed out of the hospital, her strides long and hurried.

“Evelyn!”

Julian was waiting for her at the entrance. He took one look at her expression and knew something was wrong.
