Chapter 134
"At least you have some decency left." Beatrice's sharp gaze then landed on Nathaniel.
"Nathaniel, Victoria mentioned her brother is visiting Bern City. Let's arrange a dinner together. We should also discuss your engagement."
"Given both our families' statuses, this requires thorough consideration."
Nathaniel's eyes flickered toward Evelyn, his expression unreadable.
She didn’t glance back. Not even once.
A bitter smirk tugged at his lips. Whether their engagement was real or fake meant nothing to her.
After all, she had already moved on—not with one man, but two. She handled it effortlessly.
Logically, this should have been a relief. No more pestering, no more complications.
Yet, the satisfaction he expected never came.
Beatrice turned on Evelyn, her voice dripping with disdain. "Listen carefully—Nathaniel is marrying Victoria soon. They’re the ideal match, unlike you."
Evelyn forced a smile. "I’m aware. You don’t need to repeat it like a broken record. People might mistake you for a parrot."
Her gaze finally met his, defiance burning in her eyes.
The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off their silent battle.
Only then did she slump against the wall, a hollow laugh escaping her lips.
She was mocking herself.
By the end of the month, once the surgery was over, everything would finally end.
The weight in her chest lingered all the way home.
Julian emerged from the kitchen, holding a steaming bowl. "Evelyn, I made you chicken soup. The test results came back—you need the nutrients."
She grabbed his arm, lowering her voice. "Quiet!"
"Relax. Aunt Margaret isn’t home."
A sigh of relief escaped her.
"Is there an issue with the prenatal results?"
"The baby’s fine. The real problem is you—you’re undernourished. Eat more."
Evelyn eyed the soup. The rich aroma made her stomach growl.
She devoured it, savoring every drop.
Julian’s phone buzzed again.
"Your phone won’t stop ringing. Hospital emergency?"
He glanced at the screen—Victoria.
He set it aside. "I get calls constantly. Ignore it. I’m off-duty."
"What if it’s urgent?"
"If it were, they’d call the emergency line."
He knew why Victoria was calling. But he refused to take that surgery.
He wasn’t the only capable doctor in the world.
Besides, he despised the idea of his sister marrying into the Whitmore family.
Evelyn, oblivious, smiled as he fussed over her meal.
Initially, she’d worried about raising the baby alone.
But Julian’s steady presence eased those fears.
His phone screen lit up again—missed calls piling up.
He ignored every one.
Annoyance simmered inside him.
Were the Whitmores that special? He’d made his stance clear to Victoria. Why couldn’t she let go of Nathaniel?
A divorced man, still hung up on Evelyn. Bringing her to the hospital, hiring caretakers—what a hypocrite.
Meanwhile, Victoria stood outside a private lounge, her phone nearly dead from frantic dialing.
"Why isn’t Julian answering? Did you check the hospital?" Her face was pale with frustration.
