Chapter 130

The disapproval radiating from Julian Montgomery toward Nathaniel Whitmore had only grown more intense with each passing day.

Evelyn Carter stirred awake, the sharp scent of hospital antiseptic instantly telling her where she was.

She was still in the hospital.

Still, she felt better.

Julian’s recommended medicine had clearly worked.

"Ms. Carter, you're awake. Would you like help to the restroom, or should I bring you something to eat?"

Evelyn blinked at the unfamiliar woman beside her. "Who are you?"

"I'm Margaret O'Connor, the caregiver your family arranged for you."

It must have been Julian’s doing.

Her stomach growled. "Could you get me some broth? Something light, please."

Just then, Julian walked in, carrying a food container. "Evelyn, you must be hungry. I brought you lunch."

Evelyn gestured to Margaret. "Julian, didn’t you already send Ms. O'Connor to get me food?"

Julian frowned. "I didn’t hire a caregiver for you."

Evelyn turned to Margaret. "Are you sure you have the right patient?"

Margaret checked her notes. "No mistake. You're Evelyn Carter in bed three."

"Then," Evelyn pressed, "who hired you? Did they leave a name?"

"Yes. The last name was Whitmore."

Nathaniel?

Evelyn’s pulse jumped. Nathaniel had arranged this? A storm of questions swirled in her mind—why would he do that?

At the mention of Nathaniel’s name, Julian’s expression turned icy.

It was obvious Nathaniel had his own agenda. Hiring a caregiver for Evelyn only confirmed it.

Julian’s voice was steel. "Your services aren’t needed here. You can leave."

Annoyed, Margaret quickly dialed the person who had hired her. "Hello, I just spoke with Ms. Carter in bed three."

"She insists she doesn’t need a caregiver. Make sure I’m paid for the time I’ve already spent."

On the other end, Robert Chambers sounded confused. "Why would she refuse? It’s mealtime. Did you at least make sure she ate?"

"She seems… close with Dr. Montgomery," Margaret remarked. "Since he’s handling her meals, an extra caregiver isn’t necessary."

Her tone turned pointed. "Ms. Carter must be special. Dr. Montgomery is highly respected here, yet I’ve never seen him this attentive with any other patient."

Robert’s stomach twisted. How was he supposed to relay this to Nathaniel?

After settling Margaret’s payment, Robert returned to the office, where Nathaniel was buried in paperwork.

Robert hesitated. How to break this gently?

Noticing his assistant’s unease, Nathaniel glanced up. "Problem?"

Robert cleared his throat. "Ms. O'Connor reached out about compensation."

"Does that mean Evelyn’s being discharged early?"

"Not exactly. It’s… complicated. You should hear the recording." Robert handed over his phone, bracing himself.

The tension in the room thickened as Nathaniel listened.

His grip tightened on the phone. He had underestimated Evelyn’s appeal.

No wonder the doctor had been so hostile toward him.

"Dig up everything on that doctor," Nathaniel ordered coldly.

As Robert took the phone back, an incoming call flashed—Grandma.

Nathaniel answered. "Hello, Grandma."

"Nathaniel, isn’t it time for Evelyn’s prenatal check-up?"
