Chapter 11
"Yeah, I can handle it."
"You love him that much?!"
Emily's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her face blank. "Of course. If I
didn't love him, I wouldn't have married himn."
James shot back, "But he doesn't love you."
Emily tilted James's chin up. "Do you love me then?"
James frowned, gripping her hand tightly, his face icy. Emily winced a bit from the pressure.
Taking a deep breath, Emily said slowly, "What John and I have is something you can't understand. The misunderstandings between us will get sorted out eventually."
Truth was, she stopped loving John the day he bailed on their wedding.Emily needed someone who was all in, with no distractions. But James couldn't offer her the unwavering love she needed.
She was only saying this to get James off her back. Whether he was done playing or not, she was done with this lover's game.
Emily tried to pull away, but James grabbed her hand again. He asked in a low voice, "Three years ago, you went to the bar just to get back at John. It could've been anyone, not necessarily me, right?" Emily thought for a moment and nodded. "Mr. Smith, the truth hurts, but yeah, you're right." She added, "But I don't think I wronged you. If I'd known who you were,I wouldn't have gotten involved."
James let go of her hand and sneered. "Emily, you're something else."
He never thought he'd be used as a pawn in a woman's revenge against her husband. It made him feel used and humiliated.
Seeing the smirk on James's face, Emily had a bad feeling.
James stood up, his gaze icy. "Emily, no one makes me feel this bad and gets away with it. Just wait and see!"
Emily watched him storm out, the door slamming so hard the whole house shook.
She stood there for a moment, then smiled helplessly, thinking, 'It's over.'
James was always petty.
Emily rubbed her forehead. Just then, her phone rang. She looked down and saw it was John calling.
She pursed her lips and answered, her voice cold. "What do you want?"
"It's time to go. WWhere are you?"
Emily replied, "I'll be right down."
When John saw Emily in different clothes, he frowned and asked coldly,"Why did you change? Where did you go?" Emily gently held her back. "Mom, don't bother; he would never like me.I'm a bit tired; I'll go rest." Seeing Emily looking so lost, Calliope didn't know how to comfort her, so After the banquet, Emily left the Elegant Orchid Garden in John's car. But halfway there, John got a call.
Emily could hear the soft sobs on the other end.
A few minutes later, John stopped the car, looking impatient. "Get out.
Veda's in trouble, and I need to go see her."
Emily looked at him helplessly. "John, are you really this shameless now?"
He didn't even bother pretending to be a gentleman. Rolling her eyes,Emily suddenly leaned towards John. When he wasn't paying attention, she opened his car door and kicked him inthe groin.
While John was doubled over in pain, Emily gracefully pushed him out of the car. "If you want to see her, go on your own. The car's mine."
Even the driver was shocked. He didn't expect Emily to be so fierce.
Emily shut the car door and asked the driver,"Why aren't we moving?"
The driver didn't dare to argue with her.
When Emily returned alone, John's mom, Calliope Bishop, immediately wanted to confront John.
"How could John treat you like this! Emily, I'll stand up for you. How did I end up with a son like him!"
Calliope had never felt so upset in her life. she just nodded.
In the following days, Emily went to work as usual. She often saw John at the company. As the design department director, she wasn't involved in seeking investments or negotiating deals. John, on the other hand, was super busy these days.
Despite that, he still found time to be with Veda every day. Veda's social media was filled with pictures of her and John, showing off the gifts he gave her.
John was going all out to please Veda.
What comforted Emily was that James hadn't contacted her in the past few days. However, whenever John took the design department's work to James for discussion, James always refused with various excuses.
Emily was driven to the brink of despair by the constant revisions. She had never encountered such a difficult client before.
Even for a simple necklace design, Emily had revised it more than a dozen times, but none of them seemed to catch James's attention.
Every time John went to see him, he got scolded. Once, he was even kicked out of the company, which was a complete embarrassment.
This also made John's mood particularly bad these days. He was now furious in the office. His anger was directed straight at Emily. He scolded, "Why did you provoke him? If this collaboration fails, you'll bear the main responsibility." Emily smiled. "That's your problem. What does it have to do with me? As a man, why do you always make excuses for your incompetence?" John's face turned green with anger, and his body was trembling.
Finally, he spat out, "If you have the ability, make him accept your proposal."
Emily replied directly, "I don't have the ability."
John was so angry he almost fell over. He had always known Emily as a good girl who was always obedient. Now she started speaking so unfriendly.
The two of them argued in the meeting, and the other executives could only look to John's father, Wilder Williams, the one in charge of the company.
Wilder spoke calmly, "Emily, as the designer, you are responsible for this matter. If we can't reach an agreement, we can just stop the cooperation.
Let John see that you are not weak."
John fell silent.
Emily obediently responded, "Okay, Mr. Wilder Williams."
John asked,"Dad,what's gotten into you?"
Wilder turned to John. "In the company, call me Mr. Wilder Williams."
