Chapter 299
Social gatherings were Evelyn's worst nightmare. The private dining room held a table set for twelve, each seat occupied by intimidating strangers.
She recognized only Benjamin and Victoria from the group.
Every guest appeared to be around Liam's age, radiating power and confidence. Evelyn's palms grew clammy as she considered making an escape.
"Go on," Liam murmured, his breath warm against her ear.
Evelyn forced herself forward.
"This is Cassandra," Liam announced smoothly once the door clicked shut behind them.
Evelyn shot him a startled glance before offering the room an awkward half-smile and nod.
"Cassandra, these are my closest allies," Liam said, his voice softening.
"Hello everyone," Evelyn managed.
"I've never seen Blackwood with a woman before—"
Victoria cut in sharply, "Am I suddenly invisible?"
The room erupted in laughter at her indignation.
Liam guided Evelyn to the seat beside him, arranging silverware before her. He leaned close, whispering, "They're all trustworthy. Just breathe."
Evelyn nodded, setting her phone down with trembling fingers as she studied the guests.
Their designer attire and commanding presence marked them as elites. Only those with significant influence—or deep personal ties—dared address Liam so casually.
Benjamin approached with a wine bottle. "Should I call you Evelyn or Cassandra?"
"Whichever you prefer." She forced another smile.
After filling her glass, Benjamin gestured to Liam's untouched drink. "Don't follow his example. No matter how we beg, the man refuses alcohol at gatherings. Absolute killjoy."
"There's no drinking requirement, Ben. Liam's demonstrating admirable restraint," Victoria interjected with a scowl.
"How tedious," Benjamin scoffed. Others joined in teasing Liam about his sobriety.
Benjamin raised his own glass. "Cassandra, a pleasure. Let's toast."
Evelyn reached for water, but Benjamin swiftly replaced it with wine. "Bottoms up."
He clinked her glass and drained his in one swallow.
Trapped, Evelyn stood nervously. "Benjamin, I really don't drink."
"Who abstains these days?" Benjamin chuckled.
Another guest chimed in, "Benjamin made the first move. You can't refuse now."
"Just a sip. Don't spoil the mood."
"Cassandra, humor him. A tiny taste won't hurt."
Pressure mounting, Evelyn frowned, took a deep breath, and raised the glass to her lips.
At the last second, strong fingers plucked it from her grasp.
Evelyn looked up to see Liam calmly draining her wine without hesitation.
