Chapter 297

"Where are you? I'll come to you." Liam's voice was uncharacteristically soft.

A warmth spread through Evelyn's chest. "Don't worry. I'm already on my way. Just tell me where to meet. Should we go to Blackwood Manor?"

"No, I'll send you the location."

"Alright. See you soon."

After hanging up, Evelyn received the coordinates from Liam. She relayed them to the driver, then stared out the window at the passing city lights, her heart heavy.

She still hadn't figured out how to bring up his engagement to Victoria. Meeting him like this had been impulsive—she just couldn’t stand the thought of him marrying her.

A man like Liam deserved so much better than a criminal.

Thirty minutes later, the car slowed to a stop. "We're here," the driver announced.

Evelyn glanced around before reaching for her purse. Just then, someone tapped on the driver’s window and handed over the fare.

"Thank you!" the driver beamed.

Before she could react, her door swung open.

"Come on, Cassandra." Liam's deep voice was like a soothing balm to her nerves.

Stepping out, Evelyn found herself face-to-face with the man she knew all too well—Liam.

Dressed in a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, he looked effortlessly elegant. They stood before the breathtaking Alpine Estate, its grand entrance illuminated by soft golden lights.

"Liam," she greeted, nerves tightening her throat. She hadn’t expected him to meet her outside.

"I’m with some friends inside. Join us, if you don’t mind," he said casually, one hand tucked into his pocket.

Evelyn nodded. "Of course."

They walked side by side down the tree-lined path, the branches strung with delicate fairy lights. Flower beds overflowed with vibrant blooms, their fragrance mingling with the cool night air.

"Liam, are you feeling better?" she asked gently.

"I’m fine." He glanced at her. "Why the urgency? Is something wrong?"

Clutching her phone, Evelyn gathered her courage. "Are you really going to marry Victoria?"

Liam hummed in response, slowing his pace to match hers.

Even though she’d braced herself, the confirmation still stung. Tears pricked her eyes as she turned to him. "Why? You know what kind of person she is. How can you marry her?"

Liam remained silent, his expression unreadable.

"There is no Victoria Dawson. Under what name is she marrying you?"

"As Cassandra Wright."

"Liam, have you lost your mind?"

He stopped walking when he realized she hadn’t followed. The pain in her gaze twisted something inside him.

A bitter smile touched his lips. "Tell me, Cassandra—were you ever in love with me? Before your amnesia, or after?"

Evelyn froze. The question hung between them, heavy and suffocating.

She couldn’t answer.
