Chapter 244
Evelyn marched past Julian, but he suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her back violently. Annoyed, she shoved his hand away.
"What the hell are you doing? Get your hands off me!"
Julian didn't release her. Instead, he yanked her closer. His gaze turned predatory as he murmured in that velvet voice she used to love, "My darling ex, why so hasty? I have something important to tell you."
Despite her pounding heart, Evelyn forced her expression to remain neutral. She glared at his restraining hand and snapped, "If you have something to say, say it. But keep your damn hands to yourself!"
Julian only tightened his grip, leaning in until his breath ghosted over her cheek. "After all those years together, do you really think I don't know every curve of your body?"
Evelyn clenched her jaw, fighting to control her rising temper.
"I know you better than anyone ever will," Julian whispered, his fingers tracing circles on her wrist.
If not for the gynecologist's recent confirmation of her virginity, she might have believed his lies. The man was a walking deception, his audacity limitless.
With a sharp twist, Evelyn wrenched her arm free. "I said let go!"
Julian reacted instantly, wrapping both arms around her waist in an iron grip. His lips brushed her ear as he growled, "You'll be mine again, Evelyn. One way or another."
Tremors of fear ran through her. "If you don't release me right now, I'll—"
Before she could scream, a blur of motion caught her eye. A tall figure barreled toward them. There was a sickening crack as Julian's arm was twisted at an unnatural angle.
Julian howled in pain, immediately cradling his injured limb.
The next instant, Evelyn found herself pressed against a solid chest, her hands splayed over warm muscle. The familiar scent of sandalwood and gunpowder enveloped her.
Looking up, she met Liam's stormy gaze, and immediately, the tension drained from her body.
Wasn't he supposed to be in meetings all day? He'd even canceled his visit to Alexander. How had he appeared here like some guardian angel?
"Liam..." Evelyn's voice softened as she took in his furious expression directed at Julian, his jaw clenched tight.
Julian sucked in a pained breath, glaring daggers at Liam. "Think being Aldenria's General gives you the right to assault people?"
Liam's reply was ice. "When it comes to my wife? Absolutely."
"You broke into my home last time! Now this?" Julian spat. "I won't let this slide."
A dangerous smirk curled Liam's lips. "Harassing my wife in public? I could put a bullet in you and call it self-defense."
Julian paled visibly, his eyes burning with impotent rage. Against Liam's commanding presence, he looked like a yapping dog challenging a wolf.
Defeated, Julian cradled his arm and hissed, "This isn't over." With a final venomous look, he stalked off toward the orthopedic wing.
Evelyn couldn't tear her gaze from Liam. She traced the strong line of his jaw, the tempting Adam's apple, the faint stubble shadowing his chin.
Pure masculine perfection.
Noticing her rapt attention, Liam's throat worked as he murmured in that deep, honeyed tone, "See something you like, sweetheart?"
