Chapter 242
"This is a poisoned land, cultivated by government-sanctioned opium fields. It's become the epicenter supplying nearly all global narcotics. And as their immediate neighbor, we suffer the worst consequences of this drug epidemic."
"Remember those 18 border guards who were forcibly injected with narcotics? They're now battling addiction daily, living in torment. In Aldenria, we have over 20 million addicts, and that number keeps climbing exponentially!"
"Despite our anti-drug forces' sacrifices, we can't stem the relentless drug tide flooding our borders."
Liam Blackwood collapsed into his chair, pressing his palm to his forehead. His voice trembled with anguish as he spoke, "What good does destroying one drug den with a missile do?"
"It barely makes a dent against Valtoria. The root of this plague remains untouched."
Alexander Blackwood closed his eyes sorrowfully, drawing a deep breath.
Liam's tone softened slightly. "I know you're not one for reckless actions. Tell me, what pushed you to this extreme?"
Alexander buried his face in his hands before meeting Liam's gaze with steely resolve. "Yes, I acted for personal reasons. Adrian, my colleague, and my wife, Cassandra, barely escaped Valtoria with their lives recently. Their safe return held me back."
"But now it's my brother. He's devoted everything to Aldenria's anti-drug campaign, a true patriot willing to sacrifice all."
Alexander's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I'd rather see him die with honor than endure the barbaric torture he suffered for six endless days. It's too cruel!"
"My brother now lies in critical condition, fighting for every breath."
His voice broke with emotion. "I don't know how much time he has left, but if I don't act for him now, I'd fail as his brother."
Liam's expression darkened. "Is it Donovan? Has he been undercover in Valtoria all this time?"
Alexander's throat constricted as he nodded.
Liam's face drained of color before he slammed his fist against the sofa.
After composing himself, Liam exhaled heavily. "A nation's defense capabilities determine its fate. With sufficient military strength, even an economically weak nation can dominate globally. But we—"
Liam rubbed his face wearily. "We still beg other nations for most of our weapons."
"In recent years, we've educated countless brilliant minds who choose foreign offers over returning home."
"We've lost so much talent," Liam lamented, his expression pained. "I apologize for my earlier outburst. Your actions were indeed impulsive."
Alexander nodded. "I'll accept whatever punishment comes."
Though this incident became an international spectacle, it ultimately caused minimal damage. Eliminating the border's largest drug operation and humbling Valtoria brought relief to many.
Liam sighed again. "Valtoria's demanded compensation will come from the military base's budget."
Alexander nodded. "Understood."
Liam changed subjects. "What's the status of the hydronium research?"
Alexander shook his head. "No breakthroughs yet."
"And Cassandra Wright?"
"Retired scientists from Solterra provided leads. She's likely deceased."
Liam leaned back, massaging his temples. "Even if we found Cassandra Wright, she wouldn't serve our nation."
Standing, Liam sighed deeply. "Perhaps it's for the best. At least the world won't face more terrifying weapons."
