Chapter 233
Liam's face darkened with an intensity Evelyn had never seen before. He shot her a quick glance before turning away, his voice sharp as he spoke into the phone. "Madam Hoffis, Evelyn is my wife. You will mind your language."
As Liam stormed out, Evelyn collapsed onto the sofa, grabbing a cushion and hurling it across the room with frustration.
First Victoria, now her grandmother? Was every wealthy person in this family determined to make her life miserable?
Evelyn had always assumed the rich were simply accustomed to getting their way.
When Liam returned, he placed his phone on the table with deliberate calm. "Don't let her harsh words affect you."
Evelyn looked up at him. After three years of enduring similar treatment, she'd built up immunity to such remarks. What truly mattered now was Liam's reaction.
"Are you defending Victoria or Madam Hoffis?" Evelyn asked, unable to keep the bitterness from her voice.
Liam sensed her displeasure immediately. After a thoughtful pause, he responded, "Neither."
"That woman may appear refined, but her actions are despicable. The way she spoke about me—"
Before Evelyn could finish, Liam sat beside her, his voice softening. "Cassandra, she's not being cruel. She simply loves her granddaughter too much. Try to understand."
"So I'm supposed to just accept it?" Evelyn felt Liam always prioritized the Hoffis family over her.
Even when Evelyn was clearly wronged, he urged forgiveness. A wave of sadness washed over her as she lowered her head with a sigh.
"Let's eat. Afterwards, I'll take you to the hospital," Liam said gently.
"The hospital?" Evelyn's head snapped up in alarm.
Unable to resist, Liam reached out, his fingers brushing through her long hair as he touched the back of her head. "Just a routine check-up for your head injury and memory condition."
Evelyn found herself lost in Liam's deep, mesmerizing eyes—so warm yet intense. She too longed to rediscover her true identity.
It suddenly struck her that she'd never undergone a comprehensive medical examination.
"Will you go?" Liam asked.
Evelyn nodded.
With a tender smile, Liam took her hand and led her to the dining table. "Don't stay angry at Madam Hoffis forever."
Evelyn responded with a bitter smile, remaining silent.
"You'll understand eventually," Liam added.
Three of the country's top neurologists gathered in the examination room. After reviewing Evelyn's medical records, they spent considerable time examining her head before exchanging concerned looks.
"Her amnesia wasn't accidental," one doctor finally said. "This was caused by deliberate damage to the brainstem."
Liam's expression turned stormy, his hands clenching into fists as he processed this revelation.
Evelyn stared at the doctors in shock. "Deliberate damage? Did someone perform brain surgery on me?"
"Not traditional surgery," the doctor clarified. "A minimally invasive procedure specifically targeting memory. The risks were enormous—one wrong move could have left you permanently paralyzed."
"But I'm perfectly healthy," Evelyn protested. "I just can't remember certain things. Whoever did this must have been an extraordinary surgeon."
"Is there any way to restore her memories quickly?" Liam interjected, his urgency surprising Evelyn.
The three doctors exchanged glances before shaking their heads helplessly.
Evelyn's face fell as she sighed. For three years, her past had remained frustratingly blank—as if those memories had never existed at all.
