Chapter 206
"Where are you going? Let me help you." Evelyn's voice was laced with concern as she reached out, worried Liam might still be too weak to move on his own.
Liam's response was sharp, his tone icy. "Bathroom. Are you coming too?" he snapped.
Heat rushed to Evelyn's cheeks, and she quickly withdrew her hand, flustered. His sudden hostility caught her off guard. Was there some tension between him and Alexander? Did they not get along?
"Y-you go ahead." She lowered her gaze and settled back onto the bed, picking up her spoon to continue eating. Her face burned, and her pulse quickened.
After finishing her meal, she tidied up and settled into a chair with a book while Liam focused on his laptop, engrossed in work. The room was silent, the only sounds the occasional rustle of pages and the soft tapping of keys.
Sunlight streamed through the window, warm and golden. Evelyn stole glances at Liam, admiring the way his sharp features softened in concentration. Even without words, just being near him filled her with quiet contentment.
Her phone buzzed, breaking the peaceful moment. She checked the screen—it was time for his medication. Closing her book, she approached him. "Liam, it's time for your medicine."
His eyes remained fixed on the screen, his expression unreadable.
A pang of sadness struck her. She hated seeing him like this—distant, untouchable. He wasn’t the only man in the world, yet he was the only one who made her feel so uncertain.
"Alright, I’ll head back then. Call me if you need anything."
He gave a noncommittal hum in response.
"Don’t forget to take your medicine on time. And your wounds—keep them dry. No strenuous activity. Eat properly, and—"
Liam finally looked up, brows furrowed in confusion as she rambled.
"—change your bandages daily," she finished.
"You—" He hesitated, words trapped in his throat.
Evelyn forced a smile, feigning relief. "Then I’ll go now. Rest well."
Was she not planning to visit again? He had only told her to rest, not to stay away. Why did it sound like a goodbye?
She took two steps before his voice stopped her.
"Hey?" She turned back.
Liam’s expression softened slightly. "Are you going back to the dormitory?"
She shook her head. "Not until you recover. You got hurt protecting me, after all."
"Then are you—!"
Evelyn blinked, waiting.
He exhaled sharply, lips pressing together before he spoke again. "If you go out, take some soldiers with you."
"Alright."
The sight of her tired face and slender frame tugged at his chest. He didn’t want her to leave, not really. "Go rest," he murmured.
