Chapter 158
Isabella Sinclair pointed an accusing finger at Evelyn Carter, her voice laced with venom. "Don't let your artistic fame inflate your ego. You're not even in the same league as Victoria!"
"She's the only suitable match for the general of Aldenria's military. You? You're insignificant!"
Evelyn clenched her fists, rendered speechless by such irrational hostility. She wasn't accustomed to dealing with such unreasonable behavior.
The tension shattered when Liam Blackwood entered. His icy glare dropped the room's temperature instantly. Everyone stiffened under his presence, including Isabella, whose arrogance wavered. Yet she clung to her belief - that Liam's heart belonged to Victoria, and he would always protect her.
Defying expectations, Liam strode directly to Evelyn and pulled her into a protective embrace. Evelyn tensed momentarily before cautiously meeting his gaze.
"Listen carefully, Isabella," Liam declared, his voice steel. "Whether you accept it or not, Evelyn will be my one and only wife."
Isabella gaped in shock, casting nervous glances toward Victoria. The other Blackwoods mirrored her astonishment, betrayal creeping into their expressions.
Victoria's eyes welled with tears as she stared at Liam with wounded betrayal.
Liam turned to Victoria, his tone unyielding. "Let me be clear, Victoria. I'd only marry you if I truly loved you. There's no romantic connection between us."
"To put it plainly, our relationship has always been sibling-like."
His expression darkened. "But I'm deeply disappointed in you. Your behind-the-scenes scheming has become unacceptable."
Cassandra Blake and Penelope Hart gasped, their shocked gazes darting between Liam and Victoria, struggling to process this revelation.
"That's not true! Why are you turning against me?" Victoria cried desperately, stamping her foot.
Meanwhile, Maxwell Blackwood and Penelope exchanged hushed whispers while Sebastian Blackwood and Isabella stood dumbfounded.
What was happening? Why would Liam describe his relationship with Victoria as familial? And what schemes was he referring to?
No one understood completely, but the implications hung heavy in the air.
"Leave immediately, Victoria," Liam commanded.
"No! I suffer from severe depression, Liam! Would you rather see me lose my mind?" Victoria shrieked, stomping again in defiance.
Evelyn sighed softly and gently tugged Liam's sleeve. Sensing her cue, he leaned down. "What is it?"
Tilting her head slightly, Evelyn whispered, "I've been studying psychology recently, particularly depressive disorders. From what I observe, Victoria may be feigning her condition."
After brief consideration, Liam asked, "She refuses to leave. Any suggestions?"
"I have an idea, but will you regret it later?" Evelyn sought confirmation.
Liam shook his head, a faint smile touching his lips. "Your call."
Satisfied, Evelyn nodded. The others watched their intimate exchange in astonishment, witnessing what appeared to be a couple deeply in love.
At that moment, it seemed impossible that Liam harbored feelings for Victoria. His gaze, brimming with devotion, remained fixed solely on Evelyn.
