Chapter 50
When they took the job, they had already scoped everything out. The guy in the house was disabled, and there was just one woman and three toddlers. No real threat.
They were six strong men; no way they could fail.
Jonathan gripped his slingshot tightly, aimed at the guy trying to climb in.and nailed him right on the head, making it bleed.
"Boss, there's a hidden weapon here. Look, my head's bleeding," one of the men cried out in pain.
Kathie came over to Jonathan's side and watched him hit the intruder with precision. She couldn't help but be impressed. "Didn't know you had that in you."
"It's nothing, but they'll soon figure out it's a slingshot. Then they'll find a way to block it, and it won't be as effective. Once they get in, we're in trouble. Have you hidden the kids?"
Kathie was anxious. "Yeah. What do we do now?"
"Do we have any weapons in the house?" Jonathan couldn't fight them off himself; he needed something for defense.
"The knives are all in the kitchen."
Jonathan nodded. "Alright, head'to the kitchen. Be ready; we might have to fight."
Kathie pulled out some silver needles. "I canuse these if necessary."
·Jonathan had her push him to the kitchen while he continued to use the slingshot to fend off the intruders. Sure enough, the leader outside quickly realized it was just marbles and instructed his men. "Stay cool, it's just marbles. Grab something to cover your heads and push through the pain. Get in there."
Jonathan reached the kitchen. Besides a kitchen knife, he found a rolling pin, but nothing else that could be used effectively for defense.
Kathie looked worried. "They're coming in."
Jonathan gripped the kitchen knife. "Stay behind me. When the fight starts, run if you get the chance."
"I can't leave you, and the kids are upstairs. We all need to be safe."Kathie couldn't abandon him.
The men in black stormed into the house. To prevent them from going upstairs and finding the kids, Jonathan launched a surprise attack from the kitchen, drawing them in.
Kathie shouted angrily, "Who sent you? I've already called the police. If you know what's good for you, leave now."
The leader sneered, "By the time the cops get here, they'll becollecting your bodies. If you give up now, you might die a little more comfortably."
These men were out for blood. Kathie couldn't understand who hated her so much.
"Stop talking and just charge in there," the leader ordered.
Two strong men kicked open the kitchen door. Jonathan released his slingshot, hítting one in the forehead. The other grabbed a knifeand swung it at Kathie. Jonathan quickly pulled her aside, getting his arm cut in the process.
Kathie realized they were targeting her. Seeing more men approaching, Kathie shouted, "Wait! You guys are in the underworld, right? You must know Raymond. I saved his life. He said he'd protect me in Eldoria. If anyone harms me, he won't let it slide."
The leader cursed, "So, you're the one who saved him. We went through so much trouble to give him a stroke, hoping he'd kick the bucket soon. And now, thanks to you, he's back."
"Exactly. Our boss and Raymond are mortal enemies. You're his savior.which makes you our enemy."
Jonathan chuckled awkwardly. "What a coincidence."
Kathie fell silent,embarrassed.
She had hoped to use Raymond's name to scare them off, but it backfired, showing how well the mastermind knew her.
The leader and his men charged in. Jonathan blocked Kathie and said,"Get out of here! I'm Jonathan Berkeley. You may not fear Raymond, but you dare mess with me?"
Hearing Jonathan's name, the men hesitated.
The leader scrutinized the disabled man before him. "You're Jonathan Berkeley?"
"Yes. I'm just recovering here. If you know what's good for you, leave now,or I promise you'll regret it." Jonathan's cold gaze aimed to intimidate them.
The leader smirked. "Everyone knows Jonathan is dead. You're just pretending." Then he signaled, and his men charged with knives.
Kathie grabbed the wheelchair, pushing Jonathan to a corner and standing in front of him. "Come at me, don't hurt innocent people." Jonathan pushed her aside. "Are you crazy? You'll get killed."
"Seven, listen. If I die, take care of my three kids." Kathie, forgetting their earlier quarrel. began her last words.
The leader ordered. "That guy's in the way. Kill him first."
Two strong men obeyed, swinging their knives at Jonathan. In a critical moment, Kathie turned and shielded him with her body.
Jonathan's eyes widened in disbelief. He couldn't stop it in time. As the knife neared Kathie, a gunshot rang out.
One of the strong men fe1l. Another shot followed, and the second man dropped.
"Anyone moves, and I'll shoot!" Ben's roar froze everyone.
Jonathan held the trembling Kathie, his heart pounding. He hadn't expected her to shield him.
"It's okay. Don't be scared," he said softly.
Luckily, Ben had rushed back after getting a call, arriving just in time to save them.
Ben ran in, seeing Jonathan's bleeding arm. "Mr. Berkeley, you're hurt."
Jonathan sighed in relief. "You got here just in time. Tie them up." He then gently held Kathie's face, kissing her forehead.
Kathie's heart raced. "What are you doing?"
"Just comforting you after the ordeal. Don't worry. Go check onthe kids." Kathie glared at the intruders. "Make them reveal who sent them."
Jonathana nodded. "Leave it to me. Go now!"
Kathie.worried about the kids, went upstairs. She had hidden them in the attic, instructing them to stay silent.
Ben tied up the attackers and tended to Jonathan's wound.
Jonathan took Ben's gun and aimed it at the leader's head. "Now do you believe me? I'm Jonathan!"
The leader trembled! "Mr. Berkeley, we didn't know you were here.We were just doing a job."
Jonathan's cold eyes bore into them. "Who sent you?"
The leader hesitated. Revealing their employer would break the code, making it hard to survive in their world.
Jonathan saw his hesitation and threatened, "If you don't talk, I can end you right now!"
Everyone in Eldoria knew Jonathan was ruthless. Crossing him meant no good end, especially now that they had hurt him. Their only chance was to cooperate.
