Chapter 28
Jonathan tentatively asked, "What if I said yes, what would you do?"
Kathie let out a cold laugh. "I'd shut that idea down real quick."
Jonathan was a bit troubled, wondering what was wrong with him.
"Why?" he asked.
"You don't even know who you are. if you're married with kids.or if you have debts. With all that uncertainty, don't go messing up someone else's life," Kathie replied.
So that was why she went to Randy? She knew everything about him.
Jonathan was in a bad mood, moving his head around, getting seap in his eyes, "Ouch, do you even know how to wash hair? You got soap in my eyes."
Kathie rinsed his eyes with water. "Why are you being so grumpy? Who told you to move your head around while I'm washing i?"
She just said something he didn't like, why was he getting so mad?
"It's because you're not good at this"he grumbled.
Kathie pressed down on his shoulders. "Don't move, Ill handle it."
From the doorway, Eileen excitedly shouted."Wow, Mommy, are you kissing Seven again?"
Kathie realized she was half-leaning on Jonathan, with her arms around his shoulders. From the doorway,it did look like they were kissing.
She quickly stood up. "Eileen, it's a misunderstanding. Seven got soap in his eyes, and Mommy was rinsing it out."
"Really?" Eileen looked a bit disappointed.
Jonathan sighed. "You're so irresponsible."
Kathie's eyes widened instantly. "What did you just say?"
Eileen also asked. "Seven, did Mommy bully you?"
Jonathan shook his head helplessly, "Eileen, you're too young to understand. Your mommy doesn't want to take responsibility, but I won't blame her."
Kathie was speechless.
Eileen covered her mouth, looking at her mommy in disbelief, her bright little eyes blinking. "Mommy, did you kiss Seven and then nót want to take responsibility?"
"No,Eileen, don't listen to his nonsense. Go play outside. Mommy is giving him a bath, and girls shouldn't watch boys bathe."
"So Mommy can help Seven bathe because you two are getting married?"
Kathie had a headache. Eileen had really latched onto this topic.
She was helpless. "No, Mommy is a doctor and needs to take care of the injured."
Eileen nodded, half-understanding, and left. To avoid any more misunderstandings, Kathie locked the door.
Jonathan teased, "Dr. Cavendish, did you lock the door to make things easier?"
Kathie tugged the towel forcefully, "You're right, to make it easier to dispose of the evidence."
Jonathan shut up. He couldn't afford to provoke this fierce woman.
After taking care of Jonathan, Kathie went to the children's room to put the three kids to bed. By the time she finished everything and returned to her room, it was already past ten at night.
Kathie lay down,exhausted but content.
Just as she was about to sleep, the phone on the table rang.It was Clayton Watson, the hospital director she often collaborated with.
"Dr. Cavendish, sorry to bother you so late," Clayton said.
Kathie had worked with Clayton many times. If hewas calling at this hour, something must be up.
"No need to apologize. What's the matter?" Kathie asked.
"We received a stroke patient in critical condition. The patient has already had surgery before and can't undergo another one. I remember you saved many such patients with acupuncture. We hope you can help."
Clayton quickly added, "The family is willing to pay five million dollars for the treatment, and the hospital is also willing to pay. We need your expertise."
If the hospital was willing to pay, it must be to maintain their reputation.Considering her pleasant past collaborations with Clayton and the high fee,Kathie had no reason to refuse. She replied, "This patient must be quite important for you to go to such lengths to find me, Alright, I'll come by tomorrow morning."
"Thank you, Dr. Cavendish. See you tomorrow."
With three kids about to start at Elite Tots Academy, which cost a fortune annually, and her grandmother to take care of, money was always tight.Agreeing to this not only maintained her good relationship with Clayton but also brought in a significant amount of money. She had to go.
At dawn, Kathie was already preparing breakfast. The noise woke Jonathan.
Seeing the ingredients she was preparing, he blurted out, "Are you going out again?"
Kathie replied while busy, "If I don't go out to earn money, you'll go hungry."
That was a hint that he was freeloading.
"Didn't I give you an IOU?"
Kathie rolled her eyes. "You did, but can that IOU buy anything?"
Jonathan was speechless. She was right, but he couldn't let his identity be revealed.
"Are you going to see that jerk of a husband?"
"You sure are nosy. But I can tell you, no, and in my heart, he's as good as dead."
"Then why don't you get a divorce?"
"To make certain people unhappy."
Kathie finished and took the breakfast out, calling the three kids to get up.
"Kyle, Mommy has to go to work later. You need to take care of your siblings today," she said gently.
Kyle rubbed his sleepy eyes. "Mommy, why do you have to go out again? Kathie was silent.
She had heard this before. Jonathan had just said it. They really were starting to talk alike after spending so much time together.
"Mommy works hard so you can have a good life," Kathie replied.
Eileen hugged her mommy's hand. "I want to help Mommy."
Kathie held her in her arms, helping her get dressed, "You growing up healthy and happy is the best help for Mommy."
Zachary was dressing himself. "When I grow up, I'll make lots of money for Mommy."
"Good, Mommy will be waiting for you to grow up." Kathie was most comforted by her three adorable kids.
At the breakfast table, Kathie reminded them, "There's medicine for Seven in the kitchen. Make sure he takes it."
Jonathan was annoyed. "Do you think I'm a three-year-old who needs supervision to take medicine?"
Kathie stared at him. "The plant in your room died. I checked it out.Guess what I found?"
Jonathan lowered his head, eating silently, pretending not to hear.
Kyle was curious. "Mommy, what did you find?"
Zachary also asked, "Mommy, I want to know too. Tell us."
Kathie cleared her throat. "Mommy is giving someone a chance to change.Just make sure he takes his medicine before you leave."
Eileen laughed, "I know, Seven must have poured the medicine into the plant. I did that once and got caught. Mommy punished me by not letting me have candy for a month."
Kyle and Zachary exchanged a look, grinning at Jonathan.
Jonathan was embarrassed and silent.
Now he felt even more ashamed, with Eileen spilling the beans.
Most of the medicine Kathie gave him, he did take. But sometimes, when he couldn't stomach it, he secretly poured the thick leftovers into the plant. He didn't expect the plant to die!
He also didn't expect Kathie to be so meticulous and find out.
"Seven, good medicíne tastes bitter but is good for you. You need to listen."Kathie said.
Jonathan gritted his teeth. "Got it. Dr. Cavendish, you should get going.Don't delay important matters."
"This is my home. I'll go out whenever I want," Kathie retorted.
Jonathan felt helpless. He couldn't argue, as he still needed her care.
